I have always called it as I see it. When Lu is wrong, I tell him so and if necessary, I say so.

When the AFRINIC board is wrong, I will tell them so and if necessary, I say so.

There is, indeed, from my perspective little difference between my comments about Lu
back then and my comments about the Board and Staff actions today. In each case,
mistakes were being made and actions were taken that should not.

As I have said on multiple occasions, while I don’t like many of the things Lu has done,
he has acted within the literal meaning of the governing documents. If AFRINIC wants
to prohibit out of region use, then there is a process for doing so. As yet, they have not
followed that process. If AFRINIC wants to prohibit the provision of addresses without
also providing connectivity, there is a process for doing so. As yet, they have not followed
that process.

The greatest danger in these processes is an RIR acting in a manner not prescribed by
its governing documents. I can’t and won’t speak to the motivations of others, but I
will say that the reason I took on this contract was because I truly believed (and still
believe) that it is vital to defend the community from an RIR that would act in such
a manner, regardless of what fraction of the community fails to recognize this fact.

There are very few checks and balances on RIRs. With one exception, this has been
largely a non-issue because most RIRs are very careful not to trample the rights of
their members and work diligently to adhere to their governing documents. IMHO,
it is in the vital interests of the internet to cure that exception, whether by force of
legal order, change of leadership, or some other as yet unknown process.

In reality, your fraud attempt was noted and you were removed from the slate for entirely legitimate reasons. The process worked and the correct outcome was achieved.
