[rpd] policy proposal - Clarification on IPv6 Sub-Assignments

Hi Sander, all,

I think this will cover very well all the cases:

"Providing addressing space to third party devices, including addresses for point-to-point links, and/or non-permanently providing addressing space to third parties, while they are used on a network managed and operated by the assignment holder, shall not be considered a sub-assignment.

The provision of addressing space for permanent or semi-permanent connectivity, such as broadband services, is still considered a sub-assignment."

Also, in the proposal summary, I will add this text:

"One more case is when an end-user contracts a third-party to do some services in their own network and they need to deploy their own devices, even servers, network equipment, etc. For example, security surveillance services may require that the contractor provides their own cameras, recording system, even their own firewall and/or router for a dedicated VPN, etc. Of course, in many cases, this surveillance system may need to use the addressing space of the end-user."

Thoughts ?

Regards,
Jordi

    Hi Sander,

Now I understand it. You are also trying to solve one more issue, which is fair and very convenient.

I think this deserves a new version of the policy proposal, updating also the abstract and so on, as we are now killing to birds with one stone.

Your point is to make sure that it is not considered a sub-assignment when for example a services company deploys their own equipment as part of a contracted service, in the end-user, and of course, in that network they will use the end-user addressing space.

    Working on that !

    Regards,
    Jordi

        Hi Jordi,

Please find a mail client that does proper quoting, this was very hard to read :)

        > ->>> My problem is that I read it as a duplicated:
        > "Providing one or more separate addresses to third party devices for use on a network managed and operated by the assignment holder"
        > and
        > "temporarily provided address space to third parties "
        >
        > ->>> may be now you see why I try to make those 2 sentences a single one?

Yes, and you won't be able to because they are very separate cases. Please go back and read again because it's not duplicate.

One is allowing separate permanent addresses to devices to connect to a network managed by the holder. More point-to-multipoint

The other is allowing addresses or prefixes (for example for VMs as you said) but only on a temporary basis.

Trying to combine those into one sentence won't work.

        Cheers,
        Sander
