Hi All,
Please, I suggest to folks to stop debating something which is obviously wrong, manipulative and potentially destrucutive for the success, however little, Africa has achieved. I bet you the African success story on Internet was not achieved this way by writing to board members behind the scenes etc. but by genuine open bottom up discussions nor was it achieved by countries banning policy meetings because someone wants a TLD, an obvious misunderstanding. We miss acquiring knowledge we honestly need. Infact, some governments contributed significant sums of money, moral support etc instead.
What are people really afraid off? join together and talk to build consensus.
Trust me, there will be only ONE dotafrica so the sooner we stop the bickering, i am on this side, you are on that side etc, and do the real work the better. There is a lot work ahead if we are honest and appreciate the engineering, policy and business considerations here. ...and no body will do it for us, Africans, if you dream international business folks will do this job you are in for a surprise. We, Africans, have to do it ALL and it will be based on consensus (ie. what we can all live with) and it will be a community based proposal not a government proposal. The normal african politics of the winner takes all and kills everything in sight for selfish interests, does not work in the Internet community simply because we are very bottomup.
So therefore, which part of the dot africa project do we want to talk about or relevant here? have we read the new process? is it favorable to an African proposal? how do we make it benefit the community? can we put our money where our mouth is? ...
Nii

Dear Mr. Tsebele -
From your last name, I gather you are from South Africa. Also, since you did not introduce yourself, I went ahead and googled the name and the name is associated as someone who works in a library in South Africa. I may be wrong on both counts, if so, I stand corrected. I have attempted to clarify the further understanding you requested on the list below.
"... But when I have come into the ICANN community, I have talked to Anne-Rachel
and Mouhamet Diop, and in an effort not to duplicate any other initiatives, we
have decided to continue putting this initiative together". I read this as if she has requested
the support of some ICANN officials for her initiative including Anne Rachel ... knowing
that there could be conflict of Interest?
I believe you "read" wrong. What that statement says and the intent is that the Principal who you pointed out, went to staff of ICANN for querying on the status of initiating a 'dotafrica' project, and was not informed by ICANN staff that there was other active project, therefore the consensus was made to go-ahead. Despite, the incident has nothing to do with your use of 'conflict of interest' analogy.
This same person again, on the powerpoint of her dotAfrica initiative at:
http://www.dotafrica.blogspot.com/on page 14 have listed Afristar Organisations
such as AfriNIC as interested Sponsors ...
The slides presented took account of all the want-to be players in the dotafrica initiative, including the various registries and organizations who expressed interested at that time. The slides are not intended to present who qualifies and who does not. Dated 2007, it was the 1st presentation in ICANN to allow for a fair debate of the initiative. Since, everyone has run along with their own proposals.
So After attacking AfriNIC, now she is attacking ICANN staff. Is she really
serious about what she is doing? I guess the next time it won't be the whole
Technical community which will sue.
Yes, we are very serious about what we are doing and we intend to correct anyone and everyone when they are doing wrong. However, you may go ahead and sue, but make sure you have merit and grounds for doing so and not based on what you "reads" and your "guesses",which are the basis of your arguments so far.
Dear Africa Friends let be careful about which image we are showing of our dear
continent! I don't know who that lady is, but please stop her for creating so much
confusion and damage to people who are trying to do things.
A better image of Africa can start from you by not forwarding an email that was sent to you as 'Confidential', which is considered highly unprofessional and highly unethical by any standard. Admittedly, having not met or known the work of the Principal, your lashing attacks falls under same.
I hope I have clarified your confusion. For those who are interested in the fair debate of dotafrica, bear with us as we teach the principles of conducting the ethos of business and communications one cheerleader at a time.
Sincerely
Nebiyu

I think thers is a need for further understanding on this list and in the community of
what is going on about the so called dotArica project. I come across the message
below from Sophia Bekele about a supposedly Interference of ICANN staff in DotAfrica
initiative!
The lady is complaining about the interference of Ms. Richell in the dot Africa
initiative (well first of all this is still an initiative and not a bid nor a proposal so I see no
point to start with) but this looks strange for me since that same person Sophia has
publicly stated during ICANN meeting in Paris something like:

This same person again, on the powerpoint of her dotAfrica initiative at:
http://www.dotafrica.blogspot/.com/on page 14 have listed Afristar Organisations
such as AfriNIC as interested Sponsors ... but on other hand she seems to
be the one behind the ban of AfriNIC meeting in Ethiopia because of AfriNIC
suporting the Afstar dotAfrica proposal...
So After attacking AfriNIC, now she is attacking ICANN staff. Is she really
serious about what she is doing? I guess the next time it won't be the whole
Technical community which will sue.

How are you?
My guy sent this email
accidental including your names in the Board list. I gave him your
address, cause I wanted you to be informed since dotafrica is
gtld, however, we were suppose to sent it via a separate cc.
Since we do not want to antagonize the Board,
we want to give them a chance to respond before it goes anywhere, so
I wish to express this to you by sending you this separate email and for this
info is not to be for public consumption at this time.
Therefore, can you please keep this info
CONFIDENTIAL?
Thank you ahead and see you all in Cairo.
Respectfully,
Sophia
