This is a fantastic idea Mark I support 100%.
There are a lot of areas to reduce the cost of these meetings. And the events team on the afrinic staff should be tasked by the board and CEO to come up with analysis of ways to cut costs of meetings.
Intra african air travel is very expensive and often cumbersome if you are not in Kenya, South Africa or Ethiopia which are the only nations whose national carriers fly to a decent number of destinations.
Using video conf to expand reach is a great benefit. Meetings could be extended into VC rooms in some of the ‘innovation hubs’ that are all over the continent.
Especially since we all in the Afrinic community have been building networks so fast to improve intra african connectivity.
If only the african airlines can follow our leadership and grow more and better routes to improve intra african travel.

It may not be pointless to have a nomcom but they certainly can run better elections.
NomCom this year had a bad deal. I'm not sure that had NomCom been made up of any other people, whether it would have made any difference.
They were aboard the Titanic - they just didn't know it.
AfriNIC will be wasting members money to conduct elections which involves facilitating members of nomcom to fly to meetings to conduct elections where no candidate is elected.
Yes one of the ways that Afrinic wastes lots of money flying people around. This contributes to why our fees are so high compared to other RIRs we are in.
Regarding Money and Meetings.
I would like to propose to the community and membership that AfriNIC meetings are no longer free to attend - that we introduce a badge fee of (say) US$100 in order to acquire the badge. However, I believe Members (Registered, Associative and Resource alike) should be provided with free tickets (up to two for Resource organisations, otherwise one voucher per Registered or Associated) at the time of filling in their advanced registration. Sponsors should also get up to two vouchers. Registered speakers (and staff) should also get a voucher. If you Register at the event or don't have a voucher - you pay the $100.
At Dakar, I noticed a huge amount of well dressed local people - that arrived in rooms just before lunch vouchers were issues - and who disappeared after lunch. I don't see why AfriNIC should have to feed the free-loaders. This would have saved quite a bit.
This was discussed on the Board around 4 to 5 years ago but we thought we could manage. I think it now needs to be re-introduced.
I know you have to pay to go to RIPE - and I presume other RIR meetings?
Comments? (Preferably from people who were at the Dakar meeting and who saw this happening)

All,
The election was run and winner declared. Majority of votes cast to have none of the candidates join the board.
So its pointless to have a nomcom in other-words and therefore AfriNIC will be wasting members money to conduct elections which involves facilitating members of nomcom to fly to meetings to conduct elections where no candidate is elected.
Come on folks...
