I’d have to disagree with you on all points:
1 – IP rights – if there’s a process in place for lodging disputes that’s what should be used
2 – domain usage – this is highly subjective and most of the emails I see about this are just annoyances and harassment
3 – technical issues are usually better addressed with the hosting provider

E-commerce – please show me a country in the world that has actual legislation covering whois data and e-commerce
I doubt you will be able to…
Website content ie. Contact details etc., is covered in several jurisdictions

The WHOIS data is needed to contact a Registrant on;

  1.  Issues relating to Intellectual Property Rights
  2.  Maybe a domain is not in use and you want the domain, you may want to negotiate with the domain owner.
  3.  Technical issues regarding the domain name

Where consultants register domains on behalf of a client, it can be a good reference to check if the domain was registered in my name.

Also with regard to e-commerce, hiding your WHOIS data will raise a lot of questions.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

I do agree with you that a public WHOIS has issues due to privacy conflicts. However in the Zimbabwean scenario for one to get the WHOIS details you need to email the Registries requesting the details. In this case anyone can get the WHOIS details. Since anyone can get the WHOIS details it may be much better if we can have a public WHOIS database with the option for protecting the WHOIS details if you do do need them to be public. This option can be much better since you can choose to keep your details private through Privacy Protection.

Now the issue comes when you have to wait a day or two even more to get a response to your WHOIS request. Having it online will ensure getting the WHOIS details instantly making the experience much better.

Public whois is problematic in many jurisdictions due to privacy conflicts
Also I don’t see how public whois is linked to “success” or “growth”
