No. I have not been able to find a local insurance company which can provide me a quote for such policy. Too much for the business that they really don’t understand the value. May be you can help? By the way, It is easy to obtain from a US insurance company.

Best regards,

Victor.

Dear Remmy,

I 100% agree with on the fact that more awareness, communication and marketing activities are needed…But the insurance and financial requirements of the ICANN RAA is not an “non-existing” excuse for developing countries/African companies willing to become accredited registrars.

Tell me how many serious companies in Africa can easily obtain “commercial general liability insurance” of $500,000? Zero! Most of the 7 active African accredited registrars became accredited through an US or European based satellite or partner (…I’m not saying that partnership is not good)….How many serious companies in Africa can easily demonstrate the ability to procure liquid working capital of $70,000? Just to do a domain name business… Very few. But all those requirements can be easily fulfill by an US based start-up simply because this works for the US economic and insurance environments. One last thing the “commercial general liability insurance” has nothing to do with the “seriousness” of the company willing to become Accredited registrar. Experts on insurance policies can explain more…

I would end by asking one more time African’s ccTLDs to do more efforts (Communication, marketing/publicity) to promote their business and add value to it. They should also listen to their local potential customers rather than ignoring what they think. People are willing to keep the money local but…

Happy Sunday to you all!

Best regards,

Victor.

Dear el and others

happy Sunday,

I think the request for insurance for registrars is a just reassurance that such registrar seeking accreditation etc is serious. So, I do not see why people should see that as barrier, but the truth remains that a few registrar invest in marketing/publicity of their businesses or kind of businesses.

A good example is what one registrar in Nigeria - Upperlink did with its license; running publicity campaign. I hope that should be a lesson to others. We should stop looking for excuses where non exist.

regards

I don’t think so… This is coming from those who want to keep the market for themselves and keep the reseller model because it is good for their business.

Let’s break the barriers and see what will happen…

Some will say developing countries ccTLDs are not doing quite well…Yes, I agree; but the reason is simple, there are doing zero effort to promote their business.

Best regards,

Victor.

I think this is the point.

The insurance is being claimed as Barrier to Entry to becoming accredited as Registrar.

So far it looks as this is not the case.

I am starting to do the research required before drafting a message.

It would be really helpful to find out how much African applicants have
been quoted and/or are paying.

Fortunately what you think doesn't matter.

My research is not finished, however. And, hence, until I have the facts and figures I shall not say much about it.

ccTLDs are Registers not Registrars, and their lack of promotion of their ccTLD is the least contributory factor.
