The work in the open source projects I am acquainted with is based on 
the needs of the people writing the code.  It may be different for 
other open source projects.

A bug was reported several months ago [1].  If the source code was 
openly available that doesn't mean that the bug would have been 
fixed.  The difference is that you can fix the problem if you want to do that.
