[AfrICANN-discuss] FW: Internationalization of the Internet Marks

Hi All,

These are good news !  Having the participation of the community when it comes to the Internet area.
Yet I think that in Africa, many effort remain to be done in terms of Internet resources management or Internet development management. 

China is also building its own internet infrastructure and shall  African or other countries ask Chinese people one day to decide on the future of that infrastructure ?

Africa needs to start working hard instead of following the trend of systematic opposition to the US as what is actually done by the Europeans countries (which I sincerely think is useless. Lets recognize the invention of the Internet to Americans and Lets start working in Africa).

Dear Anne-Rachel,

This indeed is a historic move. We all worked for it at some point, and
should be proud of this Affirmation agreement which now comforts the on
going internationalization of the Internet.

Indeed, this is a good step towards more multilateralism in ICANN
processes. Let's hope that the review committee members will be really
independent (apart from those already linked to ICANN) or adopt
independent recommendations. It's true their nomination by ICANN and the
GAC brings about some fears about this independence towards ICANN, but
since there is room for public comments throughout the process, let's be
optimistic to start with. The involvement of GAC in particular in that
nomination is a good thing but I hope in some countries real experts will
be nominated (and not just lurkers).

For sure, IGF can still play a role here in contributing to bringing to
limelight some issues to be dealt with by the review committee. But IGF
would be really effective in that role only if in one way or the other it
has concrete outputs.

Tu as bien raison. Felicitations a nous tous.. Chacun y a apporte sa pierre
et celle a venir va etre encore plus lourde.

J'espere tres vivement que la communaute africaine va prendre au vol cette
affirmation de la volonte de tous de faire de l'ICANN une organisation
comptable envers tous, en donnant a la communaute les renes de
l'organisation. C'est le renforcement ici du niveau de responsabilité de la
communauté dans son ensemble et de la comunaute africaine en particulier, et
de son engagement a une participation beaucoup plus active.

Comme tu liras partout, l'ICANN est toujours lie au Department du Commerce
Americain par le contrat IANA qui depuis le depart est different de MOU avec
ICANN. Celui ci expire en 2011 et les tractations commenceront probablement
l'annee prochaine. Alors a nos marques et soyons plus actifs pour tirer
notre epingle du jeu de celui la aussi! Les ccTLDs connaissent l'enjeu et
j'espere que les notres seront encore plus actifs.
