L'UNESCO encourage les gouvernements à participer à la prochaine
réunion du Comité consultatif gouvernemental (GAC) de l'ICANN
(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), qui se tiendra
du 22 au 26 juin 2008 au Méridien Montparnasse (19, rue du Commandant
Mouchotte, 75014 Paris).
Le GAC joue un rôle fondamental dans l'orientation des questions de
politique publique débattues au sein de l'ICANN, notamment en ce qui
concerne le développement des noms de domaine internationalisés (IDN).
Les IDN sont des noms de domaine Internet qui pourront comporter des
lettres avec des signes diacritiques (par exemple, des accents) ou des
caractères non latins.

Pour l'instant, les noms de domaine (par exemple, "unesco.org" ou
"louvre.fr") ne peuvent comporter que des caractères latins. L'UNESCO
s'est engagée à participer activement au développement des IDN, dans
le cadre de son engagement plus vaste de promouvoir l'accès universel
à l'information et la diversité culturelle et linguistique dans le
cyberespace.

Les représentants des gouvernements, des autorités publiques et des
organisations intergouvernementales peuvent devenir membres du GAC.

UNESCO encourages Governments to participate in the next meeting of
the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) of the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), to be held in Paris from 22 to
26 June 2008, in Le Meridien Montparnasse (19, rue du Commandant
Mouchotte, 75014 Paris).
The GAC plays a key role in guiding public policy issues discussed
within ICANN, particularly with regard to the development of
Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). IDNs are the Internet domain
names that could contain letters with diacritics, such as accent
marks, or characters from non-Latin scripts.

Currently the Internet domain names, for example "unesco.org" or
"louvre.fr", can contain only Latin scripts. UNESCO is committed to
actively participating in the development of IDNs as part of its
broader commitment to promote universal access to information, and
cultural and linguistic diversity in cyberspace.

Membership of the GAC is open to all representatives of Governments,
public authorities as well as intergovernmental organizations.
