Anne-Rachel,

Thank you for your continued support and this informative email, in
particular thanks for welcoming the fellowship applicants irrespective of
the outcome of the application, to the mailing list.

Indeed, they will be other opportunities in the future for the fellowship
applicants to participate. The meeting has officially started this morning,
however the last few days as usual have been informative and engaging. The
board has been in sessions both public and private discussing operational,
community and as a whole Internet based strategies which we will deliberate
during the reminder of the days and in the public forum session on Thursday
28th between 8:30am to 12noon. This will be followed by actions and decision
on the same Friday during the public board meeting from 8am to 12:30pm.
Access www.icann.org for the web cast on this day, if you would like to
participate in the session.

This morning in the public forum reports in the following areas are being
presented;

1. President's Report CEO 10:30 10:50
2. IDN Status & Evaluation Tina Dam 10:50 11:10
3. Operating Plan & Budget Doug Brent 11:10 11:30

These reports will be followed by Public Comments on the President's Report,
IDN Testing, IANA, Operating Plan & Budget 11:30 11:45, Anne Rachel, has
provided links for you to access in her earlier email below, please take
time to keep updated and abreast on issues that are on the table for your
benefit.

In addition, for your information the links below will provided informative
graphs that will give you an overview of the current and futuristic position
of the internet. From an African perspective, we probably want to concern
ourselves with where we want our position to be say 10 years from now. Food
for thought....

http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm

http://www.cnnic.net.cn/download/2007/cnnic19threport.pdf

It would be interesting to see how these stats will look like some ten years
from now, in particular what will the numbers in Africa look like, the last
10 or so years not much has happened, yet we have seen a huge increase in
mobile connectivity. I am convinced that unless we sort out our content
issues in Africa this may not change much, obviously their other constrains.
The development on ICT¹s and content will naturally drive internet usage,
beginning to leverage increase in users.

Finally, we should celebrate the new African registrar in Senegal which was
accredited during the Lisbon meeting. It would be interesting to hear what
we all think about our ability to position our brands locally and
internationally. I believe that the technology realm in Africa will only
forge forward if ICT skill sets and other skill sets in particular,
marketing, sales, accounting and business leaders have a harmonious process
to engage and share views and team up as groups that will enhance our
ability to benefit from the existing opportunities.

Note sure if the situation in most of our countries are the same, but I am
worried about the Chinese invasion .... in some parts. Which I do not mind
too much, I just worry that we are not ready and in position economically at
home to benefit at the first tier, except a handful of individuals.

For those participants who made it to the meeting, we will be meeting you
during the course of the day and week. We will get a chance to talk and
exchange ideas. Better yet you can send me emails and I will be sure to
respond to your query or greeting. :-)

Best wishes,

Njeri Rionge ICANN Board
