[rpd] RPKI ROAs for Unallocated and Unassigned AFRINIC Address Space AFPUB-2019-GEN-006-DRAFT02

Hi Haruna,

According to the APNIC implantation it takes 5 minutes.

Then, as Mark explained, it takes a few hours depending on the systems of every operator, to make it visible.

However, I’ve explained this in the presentation. In 99,99% of the cases, nobody uses the allocated resources, it takes hours, days, weeks or even months, to start using them. So I don’t think this is a valid objection.

I’m sure the staff can provide some stats about the minimum, average and maximum time it takes in the region any allocated/assigned resource to appear in the routing tables. Can we please get those figures?

Regards,

Jordi

Hi all,

It takes time to revoke AS0 state for one IP address, not to mention many of the resources are allocated in blocks. So it will be extremely inconvenient to the end-users and ISPs if their network takes a very long period to “recover”. I am however not in support of this proposal.

Regards,
Haruna.

Hi,

To further this, RPKI helps us to validate routing advertisements. It helps to keep all of us safer from route high-jacks, accidental or not. Saying this policy is a bad idea is the akin to saying you support fraud.

Is it without risks? Of course not, but the overall risks to our network environments are much smaller with it than without.

Centralization? As others have pointed out: Afrinic already manages the whois database which is being used to build IRR based routing filters. This proposal does not grant Afrinic any more, or less, control that what it currently has.

Kind Regards,
Jaco

Hi Ekaterina,

Your objection is untrue. AS0 doesn’t give more control to AFRINIC, neither changes the impartiality. This was resolved and explained several times already in the previous discussion.

An error can happen *right now* with the existing RPKI and without this policy.

However, which this policy, as we now indicate that the AS0 should be in a different TAL, the chances of an error in that TAL are lower, because it is an opt-in service.

Dear all,

I believe this policy would extend AFRINIC's power way beyond its control. AFRINIC is a registration entity and should not have authority over RPKI. Having such would run the risk of Internet centralization and undermine the legitimacy of AFRINIC as an impartial institution.

In addition, currently if there is a registration error, it is just a registration error. However, if a registration error occurs with RPKI AS0, people will actually lose their connectivity.

For these reasons, I oppose this policy.

Best wishes,

Ekaterina Kay Kalugina
