[rpd] Co-Chair Election Process

Hi Taiwo,

 

While I agree about the “show hands” is at the elections process, this elections process is normatively invalid, because it has never been referenced and agree by the community in the PDP.

 

I just re-read both the PDP and the elections process, to be safe. I think I’m correct in my assertions here.

 

So, it is perfectly fine that we decide now an alternative way if it adheres to the PDP. It doesn’t need to adhere to the elections process.

 

On the other side, we have already done paper ballots, so we have clearly ignored the non-normative elections process.

 

The PDP, fortunately, doesn’t state that the public policy meeting should be “in-person”, that’s the reason we can do it on-line.

 

According to that, “show of hands” doesn’t indicate an in-person show of hands, because this elections process is not either attached to an in-person meeting. There is only one place where it mentions “All candidates shall be given the opportunity to present themselves to the community in a brief speech during the face-to-face meeting”. But in the context of a non-face-to-face meeting, this text doesn’t force that (and it can be fulfilled by offering a video to each candidate).

 

All that said, even if I’m not against your proposal, that will require a variance on the process according to the PDP and I’m not sure we have time for that. Otherwise, that will mean breaking our own PDP, while an electronic voting doesn’t break it.

LACNIC always do this remotely and electronically, using the subscribers in the RPD mailing list at some point before the process starts (to avoid “lots of friends” not really “part of the PDP” to join the day before the voting).

 

I will think it is the best choice we have in replacement for a non-in-person-meeting.

 

I think they could help in providing the platform or the code or something similar, in case you don’t have already an existing platform to do that.
