AFRINIC is pleased to announce the launch of the Fund for Internet
Research and Education (FIRE). The FIRE Programme was launched today, 19
May 2012, by the AFRINIC CEO Adiel Akplogan, at the AFRINIC 16 Policy
Meeting in Serekunda, The Gambia. This is a grant and awards programme
designed to encourage and support the development of solutions to
information and communication needs in Africa, emphasising the role of
the Internet in the social and economic development for the benefit of
the African community.

The FIRE programme has been set up in collaboration with the
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to further the
development of the Internet and technical capacity building in Africa,
in line with their mission to support Internet technology usage and
development across the African continent.

There are three funding categories namely:

.      Innovation on access provision

.      E-Development

.      Freedom of expression

Project proposals and award nominations from Africa-based public or
private sector organisations, university, or research and development
institutions and non-government organisations will be considered.
Applications must be aligned with FIRE programme objectives, eligibility
criteria, and administrative guidelines. Individuals are NOT eligible to
apply.

The call for applications will be open from today, 19 May 2012 until
