Hi Tijane,

I am in LA, are you still awake in Tunis?
If you will settle on this topic of the fund for the Wednesday session, then please make sure to stress it is there already as part and in line with our African strategy. And in this case it is proposed within the session to be expanded to include all other developing countries.

Let us follow up together

Beat regards
Tarek

Hi Tarek,

Yes, sure, I’m following the discussion.
As for the AFRALO-AfrICANN meeting in Toronto, I managed to avoid the theme of the ASWG as per your request to avoid duplication despite the large support it got.
People found then that the idea raised by Jean Jacques in our last ExCom meeting in Prague about the creation of an ICANN fund for the developing countries a good replacement. I know that we proposed in our strategic projects for Africa the creation of the foundation, but you know.

Thanks Mohamed for your wishes, I think we have a wonderful chance with the new CEO Fadi as he is very motivated. We need to use his motivation rightly for Africa, and I think I will be able given my new role to empower the implementation of our plans to support Africa.

Tijani, I hope you are following the discussions on the African lists regarding the AFRALO- AFRICANN session on Wednesday in Toronto. We need to make sure that there are no duplications with our session on Monday about the African strategy. The Fund proposal is already, as you know, included in our new strategy as the Internet foundation. We have discussed that in Mauritius and it is already included in our proposed initial plan of the strategy as illustrated in the documents on the Afrinic website.
Any ideas are generally welcome, but I hope the Wednesday session can maybe focus on AFRALO specific issues rather than any duplications with the African Strategy session on Monday. The Monday session is planned to include all of the ASWG members plus Steve and Fadi and maybe some other board members will be invited to comment.

Tijani please tell me what do you think? And anybody who wants to comment?
Nii has already put a lot of effort in the last few days in explaining to the African list the role of the ASWG.
Awaiting your feedback.

Best regards
Tarek

Hi everybody,

I have given a report this week in LA about our work in progress of our African strategy to the ICANNs board committee on global relations BGRC during the board retreat this week in LA.
It was well received by the board members attending the committee. I have also spoken to many other board members here in LA about our good work and they have been very supportive including Fadi. Ray has also been helping in that.

Last week I was in Khartoum attending the African ministerial ICT meeting and our work was also positively received as attached.

The following is a report about my mission to Khartoum:

- I have spoken at the ministerial meeting on behalf of Steve Crocker and Fadi Chehade.
I have thanked the African Union for the invitation. My talk focused on the Internet evolution in Africa, ICANNs and Afrinic role in Internet development, the ICANNs Senegal meeting and the exchanged high level letters, ICANNs new internationalisation plans, the work in progress of new ICANNs strategy for Africa, Africa as a the first region that ICANN is starting with to implement its internationalisation plans and strategies, an invitation for wider participation in ICANNs constituencies and GAC (noting that there will be a HLM for governments this time in Toronto.)

- I have been invited also to speak at the closing of the experts meeting on the day before the ministerial meeting started

- The attitude of the African Union by Commisioner Elham Ibrahim and Moctar Yedaly has been very positive towards us and they have welcome our participation (Mike Silber was also there and he had some good opportunties for networking). The Commissioner has mentioned ICANN three times in her opening speech in the presence of the President of Sudan. Her references to ICANN were in relation to the build-up of the relations after the Senegal meeting last October and her views and expectations from ICANN in the coming months.
After my talk there was a general welcome for the new signals about ICANNs internationalisation plans and the new African strategy for ICANN.

- I have met briefly with Aida Bogoda from UNECA and she looks forward to our participation in the African IGF in October and I have confirmed to her that we will have participation from ICANN and the African Workgroup to promote the African strategy

- I have met with the new minister in Senegal Abdou LO and he was interested to learn about the progress since the last ICANNs meeting in Senegal last October. He is relatively young, motivated, open minded and he studied and lived in Germany for many years. I speak little French, he speaks little English so we had our conversation in German. He can be a good asset for our future African strategy implementation on a government level.

- I also spoke with the minister of Burundi and the minister of Borkina Fasso and they were eager to learn about ICANNs internationalisation plans and our African strategy.

- I have spoken in details with the new Minister of ICT in Egypt, Hani Mahmoud. He used to work for vodaphone before he was hired as the chair of the postal authority in Egypt just before I left.

- I had brief talks with the minister of Zambia, as he is taking over the chairmanship of the African council of ICT ministers for the next two years. We need to keep a dialogue with them.

They all expect to see a stronger presence of ICANN in Africa on the ground in the coming phase.
I think we have a good chance to make a difference in Africa.

I travelling a lot, Oslo, Mauritius, Khartoum, in the last weeks. This week in LA and next week I am with Fadi and Steve Crocker in DC. Then I have also India, Kuwait for some government meetings and the Arab IGF and all before Toronto.
So please bear with me when I am not always fully online with you.
Please keep our good work going on.

Best regards
Tarek
