by the fact that the discussion generated by the anti-shutdown proposal was necessary and pertinent and that the philosophies under which said proposal was written were with good intentions and for the general good of the community (especially with the authors
open admission that the proposal was flawed and was designed to create discussion to facilitate finding the right solution to a real problem, with the full input of the community once we had created the debate).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri">Yes, sometimes the language may seem antagonistic, but I also think that there is a place for total honesty and bluntness. Sometimes when you strongly believe that an idea is damaging
and outright dangerous, that must be communicated in no uncertain terms. This also stems from individuals who attempt to manipulate words to change their meetings – this is far harder to do with someone is totally forthright. Yes, that approach is not to
everyone’s liking, but then again, what approach is? <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Calibri">To be completely frank, policies on this list can have a dramatic effect on the functioning of businesses and companies on this continent. Businesses that employ tens of thousands of people
collectively, and have hundreds of millions of dollars invested in them. When policies and disagreements start affecting those businesses, especially in a negative way, there is no way that we can expect things to be entirely harmonious, because people on
this list will attempt to protect their companies, their employees, their interests – and hence, while we seek consensus, we have to openly acknowledge that in these days of the last of the resources, there will be conflict – the trick is how we deal with
said conflict, and hiding our heads in the sand is not the way to deal with it. We also need to acknowledge that in every negotiation, which is what we are effectively engaging in when we debate policy, that there will be hard lines, that people will not
move on. Consensus happens when agreement is found without crossing one of those hard lines – if however, a policy crosses a hard line, there will be no consensus – and that is also ok – not every policy NEEDS consensus – this is why the process exists, so
that some policies can survive, and some can die if they are unacceptable.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

leaders of said factions in the same room and getting them to work out the issues, so that we can get back to a point where we are discussing based on policy, based on content, and based on issues that are substantive, rather than from a geographic, linguistic

no audited financial statements and no board of their own, or should AFRINIC be scrutinizing those that they give money to far more closely, and asking for the same level of transparency from those that they give money to that we require from them.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

3 years, we have come a long way to stabilizing the company and its financial position, but in order to maintain that, we probably need to discuss openly as a community about the level of transparency we want into those finances and then once we as a community
come to consensus, we can request the board supply the transparency we agree is necessary. But let us have an open and cordial discussion so that we get to the right point.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
