This is, of course, grossly inadequate to meet Africa?s current IP address needs, making IPv6 the only sustainable way to continue to grow the potential of the Internet in Africa. As of today, that?s why after having trained over 6000 engineers from 50 countries, in 2018, we designed and organised the world?s first deployathon as a mechanism to shorten the time between learning about IPv6 and actually implementing it. In 2020, we redesigned the event and organised it entirely online. Nevertheless, 30 organisations from 14 countries were able to accomplish 24 deployment KPIs: ? 7 validated route6 object ? 4 address plans in IPAMS ? 4 advertised IPv6 prefixes ? 2 validated RPKI ROA objects ? 2 IPv6 traffic from test VLAN ? 1 IPv6-enabled DNS ? 1 DNSSEC IPv6 signed IPv6 reverse zone ? 1 IPv6-enabled website ? 1 IPv6-enabled email ? 1 network with IPv6 user traffic If selected, you will get the same step by step guidance, tools and techniques we?ve perfected in 8 (e-)Deployathons and +100 helpdesk calls to help you move your IPv6 deployment one clearly measurable step forward in full accordance with your network change management processes. Date: 25th May to 27th May Time: 4 hours each day Location: Zoom (but we promise it will be fun ?) Eligibility: Qualified engineers from any country in Africa If you are an engineer who runs a network and believe that you can make one concrete visible step towards IPv6 deployment (or advance your stalled IPv6 deployment), apply for a spot here - https://mautic.afrinic.net/edeployathon (Only 35 spots available) Deadline for application:16th May 2021. This is something I have picked up from various articles, blogs and podcasts over time... It makes sense though, right.... To some degree a URL under a descriptive domain give an indication as to what I expect to load. I am sure you can argue that, but in general zoom.com/1234 (or meet.mixp or whatever) is familiar and has some degree of trust already. Usually a subdomain matching the sender or a well know brand helps. There are also checks that could be done on the domain prior to clicking through, should I choose to do so, if its not known/familiar. However, http:// alturl (dot) com/ 2r5u3 could literally forward to *anywhere*. I have no way to know. Clicking that is therefore dangerous. In any case, while I did not have a specific reference in mind, as to me this is a known thing in infosec, a quick google search turns up many hits. https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2018/05/23/url-shortener-cryptojacking https://thenextweb.com/news/using-url-shorteners-expose-privacy-invasions-malware-attacks https://cofense.com/url-shorteners-fraudsters-friend/ https://safecomputing.umich.edu/be-aware/phishing-and-suspicious-email/shortened-url-security https://blog.malwarebytes.com/threat-analysis/2016/01/when-url-shorteners-and-ransomware-collide/ Thats just from the first page of the first google search I tried. Of course, while shortened URLs are in general dangerous to most non-tech Internet users, they can be checked if you have a terminal with curl handy: ``` ? curl -o /dev/null -s -v http://alturl.com/2r5u3 2>&1 |grep 'Location:' < Location: https://gouv-bj.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIqfuyppzwrGNWB6OD779-Thqu0ej0iJJEW ``` The result is really not that long that it would have been an issue to paste into an email as is.... so why shorten it and obscure it? Security features for MyAFRINIC and RPKI In June 2021, We plan to deploy enhanced security features for the MyAFRINIC portal and RPKI users. The most interesting enhancement is the introduction of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) which will allow us to deprecate the use of BPKI.that includes a Time-based One-time Password (TOTP) app is linked and used by simply scanning a QR code, once the 2FA is activated, BPKI will not be needed to manage the RPKI. The team will communicate with members about further details of the upgrade. Besides, the RPKI infrastructure will be equipped with a new Hardware Security Module (HSM). The HSM will significantly increase the level of security with respect to digital keys and certificates. MyAFRINIC V2 Webinar In 2020, AFRINIC embarked on a project for updating the current version of MyAFRINIC the goal here was to make it as user friendly as possible to both our members and our community, allowing our members to better engage with AFRINIC services and products. We launched an online consultative survey and received feedback from 283 respondents of which 85 were complete responses. We have organized a webinar to enable our stakeholder to test this platform.I therefore extend an invite to ?Breaking the ice around MyAFRINIC v2?? Webinar that will take place today 20th May 2021 at 12:00 UTC.This session is a follow up on the initial engagement of AFRINIC with you to understand and solve your problems and challenges. You can join us, Register here Update on the application for Injunction ref Cloud Innovation Ltd vs AFRINIC In last month's update, I shared with you the existence of the application for injunction lodged by Cloud Innovation Ltd, the latter being one of AFRINIC?s resource members. We have since received all the documentation in connection with the said application for injunction and AFRINIC has retained services of legal advisers to defend its position. We can not go into the details of the said application as the matter is still pending before the Hon. Judge in Chambers. We can, however, relate the gist of the application. It transpires that despite the clear provisions of the Registration Service Agreement whereby AFRINIC has informed Cloud Innovation by letter dated 10 March 2021 of certain short-comings and failures on their part and which the member was contractually bound to remedy within a delay of 30 days and/or to at least respond to AFRINIC within the said delay, Cloud Innovation instead opted to seize the Hon. Judge in Chambers of the Supreme Court by applying for an injunction against AFRINIC. Update on other pending applications for injunction against AFRINIC In regard to the other 2 existing applications for injunction against AFRINIC, namely Afri Holdings Ltd & Others vs AFRINIC and Logic Web Inc. vs AFRINIC, both matters are still pending before the Hon. Judge in Chambers of the Supreme Court. You may recall that both cases concern misappropriated IP number resources that had been reclaimed by AFRINIC. Leasing Unused IPv4 address and the CPM On 13 May 2021, a circulating email to AFRINIC's Resource Members purported to provide assistance to Resource Members who wished to lease unused IPv4 address blocks. As a reminder, the allocation of IP Number Resources is effected on a strict-need basis according to the provisions of the Registration Service Agreement (RSA). Members should notify AFRINIC about any change impacting allocated IP Number resources and surrender to AFRINIC any IP number resources no longer required. Stock-piling of allocated IP number resources is strictly prohibited as outlined in the Consolidated Policy Manual (CPM). We are planning to have a series of webinars in the coming weeks on CPM. AIS?21 Online We are now only a few days before the AIS?21 Online starts. The registration for this meeting is set to close on tomorrow 21st May 2021. Podemos, no entanto, relacionar a ess?ncia do pedido. I also recall that we had the same discussion a few days ago in the RPD list. I think it is very clear that one of the candidates is getting support from an organization for a campaign to promote him in a very unethical, immoral, and in many jurisdictions against the law, because the usage of personal data. Further to that, it is clear to me that the usage of the AFRINIC mailings list and whois is against the purpose. I think it is absolutely mandatory at this point that the candidate in question is disqualified, because we can?t accept Board candidate that is ignoring the basic rules of the community. That will be an unacceptable disgrace for the global Internet community. I hope the Board and the NomCom can immediately respond to this. Note that I?m not for or against any candidate, neither have personal pros or cons against any of them, but as I can read in the list, it seems clear that the candidate taking part of this campaign has not even got the right knowledge about the PDP, RSA, ICP-2, bylaws and in general how the community works. So, it is a good candidate? For full disclosure, I not an AFRINIC member, however, I?m always for the best in the interest of AFRINIC and in general the Internet community and the protection of personal data, so I feel that it is a ignominy against all us (and not just the members), if we allow this to keep going on. On doit lui faire barrage. I am sure you are all reading the various posts as relates to members being promised money and others being coerced to vote and send proof of the vote to people whose mobile numbers start with a +852 which is an internal suffix for HongKong and they are purporting to be from AFRINIC Election Team. Many campaigns receive requests for recommendations and promotions on a regular basis. The premise is that you should propose someone who knows what the community is all about from the inside. As a result, many campaigns evaluate the following elements before making the decision of voting: ? ? Is the candidate well-qualified for the position? ? Does the candidate have a good work ethic? ? Will the candidate's behavior or performance potentially have a negative effect on the community in any way? ? For the record, as long as the technique follows the campaign's internal protocols, it is usually acceptable. If there are no such protocols for providing personal suggestions, there are a few options: ? ? In a small campaign, talk to the boss personally to say you'd like to make a recommendation via a personal introduction. ? Providing Appropriate Details Whether you write a letter or make a personal introduction on the candidate's behalf, the way in which you describe candidate can make or break his chances. Focus on a few things in your recommendation: ? the candidate 's background, education and experience ? As previously stated, this is standard practice for many campaigns, so there is no reason to single out Paul and dismiss his candidacy for something that is not incorrect. Instead, let us mainstream this method among our community and focus on what truly important. Cheers -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I do not see the candidate campaign as a being unethical or immoral cause the AFRINIC organization is built on the emphasis of democracy. Thus, in a democratic election everyone is allowed to support which ever candidate he or she believes is qualified for the position in contention and understands the AFRINIC and its rules. If the process of selection an appointment, then this ?candidate campaign? as you call it might be an issue but in this case selection is done through a free and fair election and voting system. Although the promise of financial benefits makes it smell of malfunction, fault and corruption and AFRINIC does not support such but promoting or suggesting a candidate should be not considered immoral. Additionally, being a member of the AFRINIC community automatically means that you can be connected by other AFRINIC member at some point. If you don?t want be contacted by other members, there is an option whereby you can choose to unsubscribe or ignore the message from whomever is contacting you or making the suggestion. Finally, the idea of suggesting to disqualify the candidate in question is entirely out of proportion, unacceptable and should not even be in consideration. The candidate has not committed or done anything that would make him liable to be disqualified for the election and position. This issue should be carefully looked on from all perspectives with not bias. Hence it is a democratic process, the candidate reserves the right to campaign and canvas for votes. However offering an incentives is an unethical way to do it. I agree with you on this. It is ethical for member of the community to show integrity in voting, as the onus of ethics rests not only on the candidates, but on everyone. These campaigns be it self-driven, or third-party driven shouldn't warrant disqualification or deter anyone from voting the right way if the election process is followed, and members vote in the interest of AFRINIC. What I don't seem to see is any clear evidence to support them. So, what did I miss? I see some folks claiming that somebody tried to buy votes. Where are those actual messages and who sent them? All I have seen so far is some alleged email messages from Nishal Goburdhan encouraging people to vote and not even mentioning any specific candidate(s). If there's something wrong with that then someone will have to explain that to me, because my small brain doesn't understand. If there are messages that were sent BY ANYBODY and that are clearly offering money in exchange for votes, then if those are in plain text form, or if they can be converted to plain text, then I ask anyone making claims about such things to please post those here WITH FULL EMAIL HEADERS (because as we all know, emails can be rather trivially forged). On the other hand, if any such "bribery" messages exist and can be rendered as screenshots, from a phone or whatever, then I hope that whoever may be making such clains will make screenshots, post those to imgur.com or Google Drive, or to any other such service and that they will then be so kind as to share, publicly, the relevant URLs. Separately, my friend Jordi also seems to be a bit up in arms about what may or may not constitute misuse of public but personal data, e.g. in ways that might violate either the European GDPR or its counterparts elsewhere, e.g. in Mauritius. I personally have trouble getting too awfully upset, anxious, or angry about this secondary issue, in no small part because like most of the rest of you, I have been a daily recipient of email spam for about the past 20+ years. If I ran the world, then we would catch all spammers and immediately shoot or castrate all of them. but the global Internet community apparently feels that my preferred approach to the problem is a bit too harsh, and that lesser punishments should apply. Given that context, and that fact that massive violations of GDPR are taking place, even within the EU, AND on a daily basis, AND going entirely unpunished, I have some trouble getting too hot and bothered about the possibilitty that someone may have spammed to encourage voting generally, or spammed for their favorite candidate in the upcoming election, particularly given that this alleged spamming was quite evidently confined to a small scale, and to a very limited audience. (If we are going to start killing spammers, could we please start with the ones that are sending out billions of spams per week?) Any claim of buying votes in any RIR election is, in contrast, incredibly serious however, and I hope that any clear evidence of this will be made public immediately. Jordi also wrote: >I think it is absolutely mandatory at this point that the candidate in >question is disqualified... That seems a bit hasty to me. It is illegal in many jurisdictions and it is immoral and unethical. You need previous and explicit consent to obtain that data AND to use it. I can tell you an history about this: My personal data, which is in the Spanish national electoral census, for many years was provided before each election process to the different political parties. This was, in my opinion against the Constitution (privacy right). I asked the government (Ministry of Interior), to NOT pass anymore my personal data and they denied it because ?you?re not a politician?, so it was even a clear Constitutional discriminatory breach. I brought the case against the Spanish Government into the Administrative Dispute Court. I lost the case there, so I escalated the case to the Constitutional Court and ?. Bingo! Law has been changed, so since then (about 6 years ago) *every citizen* has the right to ask the Government Unit in charge of the census, to NOT pass the data to the political parties. So: it was clear that it is illegal to campaign sending me messages by email, postal mail, phone, etc., *unless* I?ve provided a previous and explicit consent to each of the candidates (or their parties) *EVEN* if my data is public (for example, in the case of AFRINIC, in mailing list archives, whois, etc.). Hence it is a democratic process, the candidate reserves the right to campaign and canvas for votes. However offering an incentives is an unethical way to do it. I agree with you on this. I also agree that calls for disqualification is completely blowing the situation out of proportion. The said Director shall recuse himself/herself from voting on any such matter before the Board where such a conflict exists or may exist. iii. The remaining members of the Board may decide that said Director should be excluded from discussion of such matter where a conflict exists or may exist. And to the AFRINIC NOMCOM, perhaps it would be also significant if you as the nominating body looked into the board candidates in light of all the allegations that have been raised by AFRINIC resource members and the Internet community across various NGOs. I am sure you are all reading the various posts as relates to members being promised money and others being coerced to vote and send proof of the vote to people whose mobile numbers start with a +852 which is an internal suffix for HongKong and they are purporting to be from AFRINIC Election Team. I smell fraud, misinformation, misrepresentation and potential corruption which are all not values that AFRINIC subscribe too. Resource members, the Internet community and the organization ought to take this issue seriously because the very foundation of the Internet Routing Registry is at stake and for those who have been here long enough know that time for playing games is long overdue and AFRINIC affairs can no longer be ignored further by the majority membership. I take a few days off to go and work on some other stuff closer to home, and it seems like I missed out on everything! I see a lot of accusations flying around.
