New Role?

I was audit-co chair for a long time 😊 No longer on the board – but I still feel the need to know how money is being spent when it’s the members money that is being shelled out.

I point out – there was a point that AFRINIC was trading at an $80k a year loss… through the work of certain people and changes in the way things were done – that turned around – and we made some nice surplus and rescued the organisation from what was a path to bankruptcy (and I have graphs, that are public, and have been presented before that can demonstrate this) to a healthy financial position.

My concern – if we don’t keep the reigns on – how long before we have another 2012 -> 2014, where we made a combined forex adjusted loss of $481,059? Our travel costs increased by a whopping 26.8% in the 2017 financial year – to a level that they have not been at since 2014.

By comparison – our net incoming increased by just 10.7% in the same period.

Post the closing of the financials in 2015 – as per the AFS – a strategic reserve was created – and one of AFRINIC’s biggest arguments has been – we make surplus to build up the reserve. An initial $250k was placed in this reserve at time of creation (Board resolution 201511.261), an additional $300k was placed into this reserve in November 2016 under board resolution 201611.316, and a further $500k was placed into this in April 2017 – to bring the reserve to $1,056,860. Yet – now in June of 2018 – despite the published surpluses – we have seen NO growth in the strategic reserve fund in more than a year – what gives? That’s the whole stated reason for generating the surplus?

So yes – call me the auditor if you want – I am simply the guy that is watching the financials – very closely – because I for one, want to know that the money that I contribute to this organisation is being spent to the benefit of the members and the community - and so – the questions will keep coming

Andrew

Hi Omo,

It seems that Andrew Alston has assumed a new role as AfriNIC Auditor.

Please, allow him to work with the CEO.

Thanks

William A.

This line of questioning is unnecessary and unbecoming. I am surprised the CEO has time to respond to this.

Sorry,

Last question – why is this event not on the AFRINIC Event calendar (or the ISOC event calendar)

The sponsorship is a lump sum. There is no additional or separate amount for a cocktail.

That sounds plausible, though it's more likely to be 4 people, not 5.
