Event: iWeek 2017, Durban, South Africa Date: 6 September 2017 Time: 13.30-17.00 Location: Yellow room Register: http://bit.ly/durban6 Target audience: ? Network Engineers ? Managers ? Researchers Presented by: ? AFRINIC and Research ICT Africa Prerequisites: ? Your organisation is actively running IPv6 or has immediate deployment plans. Session Description This year AFRINIC conducted a survey on the key challenges to IPv6 deployment in Africa. This session seeks to provide insights into the findings of the survey and: ? Confirm whether the IPv6 survey results match the reality of Southern African network engineers who are deploying or planning to deploy IPv6 ? Get deeper insight into the challenges specific to IPv6 deployment in Southern Africa ? Brainstorm and prototype possible solutions that both operators and AFRINIC can implement to drive IPv6 adoption ? Explore feasibility of formation of a South African IPv6 Task Force The session begins with an overview of the state of IPv6 adoption and usage in Africa by different Internet stakeholders, primarily, service providers, content providers, and end-users. The main results of a preliminary survey on the main challenges faced by various stakeholders in different types of networks will be presented. We will also build on the preliminary survey results to learn about operators? obstacles and plans regarding implementation of IPv6, to gain further insight into why IPv6 adoption is slow in the region. Ultimately, this exercise will provide basis for precise points of intervention by AFRINIC. This session also attempts to understand challenges that network operators, engineers and managers face in deploying IPv6 in their respective organisations. The tentative agenda is as follows: 13.30 - 13.45 - Introduction 13.45 - 14.00 - State of IPv6 deployment in Southern Africa 14.00 - 14.15 - Presentation of AFRINIC IPv6 Deployment Challenges Survey 14.15 - 15.00 - Brainstorm on deployment challenges 15.00 - 15.30 - Break 15.30 - 15.45 - Present deployment KPIs 15.45 - 16.30 - Brainstorm solutions to drive deployments 16.30 - 16.45 - Presentation of AFRINIC IPv6 Program 2.0 Regards, AFRINIC From mark.tinka at seacom.mu Tue Sep 5 06:54:15 2017 From: mark.tinka at seacom.mu (Mark Tinka) Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2017 08:54:15 +0200 Subject: [Community-Discuss] SAFNOG-3: Live Stream Happening Now... Translation costs money ? you do translation for your targeted audience ? who is meant to be pay for it? And if there is translation to French ? surely since its Southern African focused ? the target SHOULD be the local languages first ? in which case who is going to pay to translate it to: Southern Sotho Tsonga Afrikaans Tswana Swati Zulu Northern Sotho Ndebele Xhosa Venda And then ? we move into the rest of Southern Africa? So we have to add Tonga Shona Chewa Tswana Portuguese And right there ? I?ve only included the OFFICIAL languages for the southern African region (and I may well have missed a few) ? what makes you think that a language that is not spoken in the region must get priority over the languages that are official in the targeted area? More than 100 million Swahili ? More than 100 million And French comes in 4th ? at roughly 90 million. Then we?d also need to do Hausa (50 million), Oromo (30 million), Yoruba (30 million), Igbo (24 million), Amharic (18.7 million) and Zulu (10 million) just to cover the top 10 languages. Basically ? you can?t cater for everyone ? it?s not economically viable or vaguely feasible. And if you?re going to try ? well ? there are far bigger languages than French that need to be covered first if you?re targeting mass audience on this continent. Firstly, the stats are from a variety of sources ? and I have said there are 90 million French speakers in Africa ? not 30 million ? and that is still less than the Swahili speakers or the Arabic speakers. Secondly, the moderator told you there was no French translation or zulu translation ? I see NOTHING wrong with what he said in that ? it is objective fact. Official estimates (and you?re free to do what I did, google, I?m not going to go and dig out what you?re quite capable of finding yourself), show that in Africa French is the 4th most spoken language ? it is the 18th most spoken language world wide ? and you have not answered me ? who will pay for this supposed translation? The world does not revolve around one language group ? and what must be done for one language must be done equally for the rest of the languages that comprise similar number of speakers (or in some cases far more speakers). There is nothing ?special? about the language you speak that entitles it to special treatment above others. I don?t see the Russians complaining that there isn?t Russian translation of everything at RIPE. I?ve never seen a tech conference where things are translated into Hindi within the RIR system or the global tech system ? Or Bengali for that matter. All three of those languages are vastly larger than French on a global scale. Anyway ? while this has been an amusing debate ? I don?t think I?ve got much more to say on this ? because I actually have real things to do ? French is not an African language ? it is a colonial language ? as is English ? it was brought here during the days of colonization. But I do not see anyone here asking for Swahili or Xhosa or Zulu or Tsonga or any of the others ? yet you dare turn around and say that because I don?t speak other languages I do not have the African spirit in my heart? I am as African as you will ever be ? I was born under these skies ? I was bread under these skies ? and under these skies will I die ? do not EVER question my loyalty to this continent or to her combined people because of the amount of melanin in my skin. Racism works both ways my friend ? and questioning someones commitment to their continent because they are unable to speak a language or because of the color of their skin ? is what that amounts to. Have I tried to learn? Yes - many times - its not something I am good at. Does that make me less African? No - it makes me suck at languages. Quite frankly, I dont care what language you speak - but I find it bizarre that we're fighting over the fact that there is no translation to a language that is not spoken in the area that the conference targeted. You can throw at me that I don't speak an african language - but that does not speak in any way to my commitment to this continent or its growth of the Internet. How many of your networks speak IPv6? How many of your networks speak segment routing? I get it - language is an emotive issue - but the reality is - it is not practical to translate to everyone - and when you do translation - you do it targetted where you can to reach the audience that you are targeting - and in this case - french is less spoken in Southern Africa that even German. I make no apologies for not being fluent in another language - I would love to be - but I have not succeeded in learning - though not for lack of trying. I also however make no apologies for my love for this continent or her people - and I challenge anyone to prove that my love for this continent or her people are any less than theirs. Teaching me to remember what knowledge, science is universal even a scientific branch (such as computers and especially all technologies revolving around the development of the Internet) has been marked by Anglo-Saxon designers or developers that prevent consumers of all these technologies are plurilingual and as such each linguistic community must fight to either obtain a translation or develop translations of the implemented technologies (such as china, belgium with flamand or even russia in the 90s) the task is immense but not impossible, for example the Grand Cheick Anta Diop, who translated a good part of the theory of relativity (and other major scientific themes of high construction) into Wolof, the impregnation of a technology also passes through its assimilation into the local culture. In Africa, if we could start by copying in our local languages ??what others have conceived before thinking one day of designing technological solutions adapted to our needs with tools translated into our languages. In this regard, a country like Tanzania has established Swahili as the administrative language practiced until the Supreme Court rulings. This year marks a special edition to celebrate the Internet Society?s 25th anniversary, an occasion to both look back at what we achieved and discuss the future of the Internet. Many of our achievements in Africa and around the world would not have been possible without our partners and community of members. The choice of Mauritius and AFRINIC to host one of the InterCommunity nodes was based on the fact that AFRINIC is a key organization for the Internet in Africa and probably one of the greatest achievements of the African Internet community in the last 25 years. AFRINIC has also been a partner of the Internet Society and the Internet?s development in Africa over the last decade, a fact that we truly appreciate and for which we want to express our gratitude. All Internet Society members have been invited to join the InterCommunity event. They can join either individually online or at one of the nodes. A slip in our process unfortunately led to the publication of a draft version of the event's agenda on the Internet Society website. The agenda is still being finalised and will be updated accordingly. Our apologies for any confusion this may have caused. Having said that, we?d also like to clarify that we do have one Chapter in Mauritius that is chartered by the Internet Society. The Chapter went through a rejuvenation process in 2011 to bring together a new leadership team (this new team is led by Kris Seeburn, with a web presence here: www.facebook.com/groups/isocmauritius/) We are aware of the fact that even after its rejuvenation, the Chapter struggled to become active locally. This is why we are currently working with the local Mauritius Chapter group to reactivate the Chapter. We invite everyone interested in joining that effort and help strengthen the local Internet community to reach out to . We?d be happy to put you in touch with the local group. If you are interested in attending InterCommunity on 19 September, either online or in person at the Mauritius (or any other) node, then please register here: https://www.internetsociety.org/intercommunity/2017/register We look forward to seeing many of you online on that occasion. If you have any questions about ISOC or ISOC Chapters please email me at " chege at isoc.org" and I will be glad to assist or put you in touch with the right people at ISOC. Best regards, Kevin G. My observation of groups in Mauritius is that people tend to be happy being founders, co-founders or other fancy titles. However, there is little advocacy on the group mission and other matters. I am keen to learn from ISOC and your experience in the region in order to address the local issue. Based on the percentage of time over your commitments you are right now - should we plan to see those questions answered 15 days after the commitment? Hey - if you hold out for another 10 days and set precedent - we may well hit Christmas before we hear from you again... I wait with baited breath for the board we elected to honour their commitments to this community - please - my lungs have limited capacity. And then, when questioned as to when the commitments made by the board would be met - stay entirely silent and say nothing. I understand that the board is busy, but a commitment is a commitment, and it is not this community that set the time frames here - it was the board who promised such. Again I ask - when will the board meet its commitments to this community that are clearly stated below?
