suspended; continue to monitor developments
*OVERVIEW*
*Level:* *Notice*
*Location:* *Gauteng * - South Africa
*Category:* Strike, Civil unrest
*Last Updated: 22 Jun 2017 12:14 (GMT)*
Local sources on 22 June reported that a strike by metered taxi operators
in Pretoria and Johannesburg (both Gauteng province) planned for the day
would not proceed; members should continue to monitor developments due to
the potential for further related action. The strike, organised to protest
operations by the app-based ride share service Uber, was suspended after
the local authorities denied permission for it to go ahead. Major roads,
including those leading to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), are
currently clear, though members should reconfirm the status of routes prior
to setting out as a precaution.
*ADVICE*
- Monitor developments due to the potential for further related strike
or protest action.
- Reconfirm existing transport arrangements and the status of routes,
including to/from OR Tambo International Airport, before setting out.
Maintain flexible itineraries and allow plenty of time to complete journeys.
- Expect a heightened police presence on major routes between Pretoria
and Johannesburg; follow all directives issued by them.
- Exercise heightened caution when using app-based ride share services
due to the potential for targeted violence. Travellers should ensure that
there is no existing taxi rank in the vicinity of their pick-up location
and keep a low profile when getting into the vehicle.
- Liaise with local contacts and monitor our alerts on South Africa for
related updates.
*MORE DETAIL*
Tension between licensed taxi drivers and Uber operators have risen in
recent weeks as the latter have been accused of unfair competition. This
has resulted in regular scuffles and protests, as well as localised
incidents of violence including the torching of an Uber vehicle on 21 June
in the Sunnyside area

Minister, further disturbances can be expected in the near term.
