Please refer to my email of 12 July 2015, especially the part that reads "The Board has initiated discussions on the setup of the Governance Committee, and has constituted a three-member work group to draft the Structure and Terms of Reference for this committee. This document will later be processed by the larger Board, and then shared with the community for comments and additional input. Thereafter, the Board will finalise the Structure and TOR. After approval of these documents by the community, the Governance Committee will begin operating". I hope reading it again, together with the response I made earlier, should make it clearer. I want to give Mr. Ntege the benefit of the doubt and presume that he only seeks to improve AfriNIC, but it is difficult under the circumstances when you consider that the very behavior he now criticizes was his own behavior while he was chair. Two of the three years that this process has dragged on so far were under his leadership as chairman of the board. I am glad to see that he is now interested in moving forward with greater board accountability, but I wish he had been such a staunch activist while he was still a member of that august body. Now is a time of many leadership changes in AfriNIC. I have a high degree of confidence in the new leadership, but they have inherited an overwhelming amount of action items. This is not to make excuses, so much as to say let?s allow them to do their jobs. If another month goes by and we have not seen some steps and target dates from the board based on the output of the committee assigned to this task, then perhaps there is reason for concern. However, expecting a complete response to such a large ask within a week of making the original request is not reasonable in my opinion. I do not believe it is in Sunday?s nature to drag his feet on action requested by the community, nor do I think he is resistant to transparency or to the governance committee. Your attack on me Shows the limited depth you might have beyond routing I might be wrong here but that's the displayed perception. As I suggested please read the archives. The whole governance issue comes from the last meeting and the emails on commitments are also online. To request definite timelines does not deserve your unsolicited attack. Yes we know we are all used to the whole T.I.A thing but we can't expect to see changes if we continue behaving this way..... It's as simple as [ dear community, expect us to get back to you within a month or so ].... We can't be reminding folk of their responsibilities whether it's Badru requesting for an update or a different member of the community... PS: In fact I would to suggest for Badru to fall back from his exercising his rights as a community member since his subjective opinions are being looked upon with a biased point of view which fundamentally does help the entire community.... This is not to make excuses, so much as to say let?s allow them to do their jobs.If another month goes by and we have not seen some steps and target dates from the board based on the output of the committee assigned to this task, then perhaps there is reason for concern. However, expecting a complete response to such a large ask within a week of making the original request is not reasonable in my opinion.I do not believe it is in Sunday?s nature to drag his feet on action requested by the community, nor do I think he is resistant to transparency or to the governance committee.Owen> On Sep 21, 2015, at 01:47 , Saul wrote: > > I must say that I do agree with Badru on this one. > > Even if the timeframe is 6 months or a year, but to say that we are > working on something with no due reporting date is a ticket for disaster. > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Badru Ntege [mailto:badru.ntege at nftconsult.com] > Sent: 21 September 2015 09:54 AM > To: Sunday Folayan ; Badru Ntege > > Cc: community-discuss at afrinic.net;members-discuss at afrinic.net > Subject: Re: [Community-Discuss] [members-discuss] Governance > > Thank you chair > > Sorry for the delay in response. > > > I just thought it would be better to give members delivery times.? Based on the discussion on this topic so far, I think it would be best to avoid referencing the past especially when it does not positively help improve the present/future. Coincidentally both Badru and Sunday occupied the board leadership position in the last few years, so one could arguably say none of them is vindicated on this subject. ;-). However,I don't think it should only be about the Chair (or Vice-Chair) but rather about the entire board acting up and I must recognise that there is has been progress/improvements (with credits to the community as well, for not relenting in their effort to keep the board on her feet) That said, all the board members should start thinking ahead of the community on issues by providing details that is known to be of global norm so the community won't have to be asking/directing the board. I also encourage all board members to make the work of their spokesperson (Chair) easier by doing the actual work as really, any accusation/challenge posed to the chair is actually to the entire board members; it's a responsibility for all and not just the leadership! I have read the minutes. while many suggestions might be made at the AGM. They are all not taken on as a commitment from the board and thus do not make it to the activity plan. I?m sure if we peruse the minutes we will see that many community members had many more suggestions. And this is not new for AGM?s the world over members offer ideas and suggestions to the board. on the same issue i?m sure you were board member at the time with shared responsibility. And I?m sure you can share the boards FULL activities for the year to see where and how the board worked on the said community suggestions or did not and why. The current item on discussion was taken on by board and a commitment made at the last meeting. I do not understand why we are using all methods of deflection from a simple request. lets stop scoring points it does not build the community. i asked for a date and somehow the thread deteriorated into personalization through proxy. Please remember the community is wider than the few of us and we need to stop this thinking that everyone has an axe to grind. We choose to serve the community in any way we decide. We do not need to like each other we just need to have a share cause which is the growth and sustainability of the Afrinic Community. I?m glad you have given a date lets move on. Then there was a first draft with comments and then the work done after the comments would be discussed. In a changing environment with a large community like ours I think allowing 30 mins to an hour to have a discussion on an issue deemed to be of such importance would not be wrong. Governance would set the culture of the organisation and in any organisations culture is everything. Lets do first things first and make sure we try our best to do them right. We will probably not be perfect but lets give ourselves a chance to achieve perfection. Regards -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Every member gets the emails on the members list, they CHOOSE to comment or not to comment, and leaving the discussion to a face to face meeting disenfranchises those who cannot be at such a meeting due to financial or other constraints. Hence, I would rather encourage all members to have their voice heard where is can reach the entire member base, rather than an extremely small minority. Hence, I agree with Seun and others who have commented that this is unnecessary considering the work in progress at the moment. Stated as a personal opinion. There are other issues that require attention and GC is just one of them. Overall the timeline looks realistic Lets not mix issues here. First discussion was on whether GC or not.
