[AFRINIC-Announce] Apply for the AFRINIC IPv6 Deployathon in Johannesburg, 20–22 October 2026

[AFRINIC Communication]

Dear colleagues,

AFRINIC, in collaboration with ISPA and ZANOG, is organising a Deployathon in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 20 - 22 October 2026.

AFRINIC has ~623,000 IPv4 addresses left in its available pool. This, as you can tell, is grossly inadequate to meet Africa’s current IP address needs, making IPv6 the only sustainable way to continue to grow the potential of the Internet in Africa.

In 2018, we designed and organised the world’s first Deployathon as a mechanism to bridge the gap between learning about IPv6 and actually implementing it.

Since its inception, we’ve run 19 Deployathons with 246 organisations from 27 countries participating. They were able to accomplish 257 deployment milestones; among them :

    • 54 valid route6 object
    • 49 address plans in IPAMS
    • 34 validated RPKI ROA objects
    • 26 advertised IPv6 prefix

Based outside Johannesburg? You could be eligible for travel support!

Our partner INX-ZA is offering scholarships to cover five fellows to the training location, or a total of ZAR 50,000.

- the fellowship covers travel and accommodation for potential participants;
- in cases where there is extraneous travel involved to get to an airport, we’ll pay for that if disclosed and agreed to in advance (eg. if the person needs a shuttle to travel 300km);
- in cases where there’s no air travel, but for example someone wanting to drive/get a taxi, we’ll cover those costs;
- INX reserves the right to validate a participant's travel plans;
- There is no per diem.

If selected, you will get the same step-by-step guidance, tools, and techniques we have perfected in 19 Deployathons, and +100 helpdesk calls to help realise your IPv6 deployment project for your organisation.

This is a clear, measurable step forward in line with your network change management processes.
