[AISPC] Proposal for historical retrospective at AFNOG

AFRINIC Program Committee,

I'm aware that this proposal is a day late, but it was just suggested to me by Alan and Seun that I submit ASAP for the AFRINIC meeting program in Gaborone.

I suggest a panel session that is essentially a historical retrospective of the Internet an the AF* organizations since their inception.  I could either speak or moderate.  Panel members could be chosen from Nii Quaynor, Alan Barrett, Tarek Kamel, Pierre Dandjinou, Mike Jensen, Randy Bush and any others who were active in African networking in the 1990s.

The basis for the comparison could be early networking attempts and the formation of AFRINIC at the Cotonou conference in December 1998.  I was the principal speaker at that conference, and in preparation for coming to Gaborone, I found both the speech that I gave and the book that was published containing the conference proceedings.  I'm looking through this material, it was really interesting to look at what we knew then and how we conceptualized it, and what we have now and how we see our current achievements and obstacles.  I suspect that many AFRINIC attendees will not have been around for the last 18 years and might be interested in this history.

I would want to confer with some of my colleagues (listed above, as well as others) to flesh out the composition of the participants and the structure and length of the session.  There is plenty of material available, and it could be very interesting.  Your comments and suggestions on these matters as a program committee would be taken into account.

I've attached the outline of the talk that I gave (messy, view in outline mode not in slide mode) to give you a flavor of where I thought that we were at that time.
