<p>I agree with Willy's answer (IPv4 works well and upgrades may be
necessary). I have more to add. . .<br>
</p>
<p>IPv4 is well understood. Wherever you learned networking,
everything you learned used IPv4 examples. It uses normal-looking
decimal numbers (with odd boundaries for subnetting and a maximum
of 255), and everything you use supports it already. IPv6
addresses use hexadecimal, which looks hard.<br>
</p>
<p>AFRINIC still has IPv4 addresses for whoever needs them. Nobody
in Africa has run out of IPv4 addresses, so they are not worried.
This isn't quite true: every mobile provider has more users and
devices than IPv4 addresses, but we all don't even think about the
extra cost of the carrier-grade NAT (CGN) in mobile, because we
think it's normal. I know of at least one mobile network who
deployed IPv6 just so they could lower their CGN cost, and they
have cut it by more than half.</p>
<p>There may be devices that don't support IPv6. For mobile, this
might include some low-end or very old handsets. For fixed
broadband, it might include very old edge devices (pre-2010 CMTS
or BRAS, for example) or modems (pre 2008) or home gateways. Of
course, if many do support IPv6, then you still gain that
advantage.</p>
<p>For web hosting companies, IPv6 is easy. Several data centers and
content companies are entirely IPv6 internally, and provide IPv4
translation for those who need it. <br>
</p>
<p><br>
</p>
<p>All of this is about to change. I see that Exhaustion Phase I
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://www.afrinic.net/2017-01-16-afrinic-is-approaching-ipv4-exhaustion-phase-1">https://www.afrinic.net/2017-01-16-afrinic-is-approaching-ipv4-exhaustion-phase-1</a>)
has slowed the allocation of IPv4 addresses
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.potaroo.net/tools/ipv4/plotend.png">http://www.potaroo.net/tools/ipv4/plotend.png</a>). It looks like we
will reach Exhaustion Phase II within a year, which means
organizations will only be able to get one /22 at a time (though
with no limit on the number of times they can get more space if
they've used 90% of all allocated space). At that time, we will be
only six months away from running out, assuming the last /12
remains reserved.</p>
<p>IPv4 runout will hit Africa next year. Anyone needing more
addresses will first have to spend money to buy IPv4 addresses or
CGN, and then begin their IPv6 deployment.</p>
<p><br>
</p>
<p>I would love to see someone inside Africa measure IPv6 speed, and
use it to promote their service. One mobile carrier and one
hosting company in the same country might quickly become dominant.
Maybe someone would host a dual-stack Speedtest site.</p>

I recently listed all of the measurements I could find. <br>
<a href="https://www.retevia.net/fast/" rel="noreferrer

<br>
In Africa on average, IPv6 is 24ms faster than IPv4. That can
mean a <br>
significant difference in how long a web page takes to load.
The APNIC <br>
data set is pretty small, though, and the performance
improvement might <br>
just mean that the "Happy Eyeballs" algorithm only lets IPv6
work when <br>
it's faster: <a href="https://stats.labs.apnic.net/v6perf/XB"
rel="noreferrer noreferrer" target="_blank"
moz-do-not-send="true">https://stats.labs.apnic.net/v6perf/XB</a><br>
<br>
I don't know how African mobile providers have deployed IPv6,
but I <br>
compared some American and European mobile providers, and
there's a <br>
correlation between 464xlat and slower IPv4. My guess is that
Android <br>
handsets are a little slow when doing CLAT. <br>
