Hi SM,

I responded to your email using my AFTLD hat (manager) since you needed info on AFTLD. Be that as it may, i want to thank you and Dr. Nyirenda for raising this issue, whereas it is a difficult conversation, we have to confront the elephant in the room. Most of us are wearing multiple hats because of involvement and willingness to serve, we should encourage this so that we compete for the positions on merit.

Regards

It is then pertinet to ask if this kind of diversity in ICANN NomCom could have led to the unfortunate selection of Board members in the recent NomCom announcement. I tend to think so, question is, can they see beyond their noses ?
That is a good question. According to https://atlarge.icann.org/ralos/afralo the AFRALO Leadership is supposed to reach out to internet users on the issues in the scope of ICANN.

SO: Indeed but not just the leadership but all the ALSes within AFRALO.

A few minutes ago, I found out that Barrack Otieno is part of AFRALO. I would like to thank him as he is the only person who is part of AFRALO who participated in this discussion.

SO: I do not know why Barrack responded but based on all the discussions so far, no question was specifically directed to any AFRALO member neither was there any concern raised in regards to AFRALO. However i notice that you indeed raised some concern about AFTLD and I believe Barrack was in a good position to address them based on his role within AFTLD.

I'll also thank Mike Silber as he is the only ICANN Board member who participated in the discussion.

SO: +1 to this.

My understanding is that for these things to get this bad at this level, something in the oversight function in ICANN is missing or has gone wrong and it should really not be happening in 2016 when we are all very conscious of the IANA Transition.
The persons representing Africa (excluding the persons I mentioned above) do not seem to consider that the issue which you raised as something to be concerned about.

SO: Well most likely this is intended to get folks like myself (who is learning to reduce my traffic to the lists) to speak, guess what, you succeeded ;-). FWIW, AFRALO is one of the groups within ICANN community that makes intentional effort to reach out to the continent whenever there is such call for leadership positions within ICANN. Some of them were shared with this list sometime last year by myself and others though the AFRALO list is where we discuss this more details. That some of us did not respond does not mean we don't care, infact its perhaps because a lot of us do and have made efforts towards that which can also be credited to the improvement we are experiencing. Yes there is still room for improvement and its good to discuss them but we should recognize that participation from our region has improved compared to the past. I think i would humbly consider myself as one of the evidence of that increase in participation from our region.

Regards

Fyi - ALAC member representing AFRALO
