held in Kenya and south-africa with the next that will happen in Africa (hopefully in my country) has no doubt proven that regional events are helpful.
I am not saying all this because I am trying to look for flimsy excuses for Africa. However I just like us to recognise the unique challenge that we find ourselves. While I know some people only attend conferences for travel experience (which does not only happen to Africans). It does not also seem accurate to term other non ietf events as talkshops.
The IETF is different from ICANN.

Definitely even by the acronyms they are different ;) however they are all within the I* right

There are more people from Africa involved in ICANN in comparison to those involved in the IETF.

You are correct assuming by "involved" you mean in terms of skills since ICANN has a broader scope than IETF which is rather more technical

I thought about what it would it take to have a meeting in Africa. The probability of success is extremely low.

Sure if you see my initial mail, you will see that i also raise the doubts, but hey "Rome was not built in a day" there was a time when most AfNOG resource people were "imported" but now afnog can boost of as much resource people (through the help of the initial resource people ofcourse). Although looking at it from the cost perspective, i agree that many people who normally attend IETF may not be able to come to Africa, and perhaps that could result to "low" success. So maybe this can be a gradual thing before the main IETF event. Perhaps ISOC can perhaps take advantage of events like ISOC day, to not just talk IETF in theory but pick 2 or 3 currently active drafts(which could be interesting to our current regional needs) to discuss at the event.
Now ISOC(ietf convenor) which has a global reach should continue to make IETF as such so as to allow Africans develop more interest and see RFCs development as part of their responsibility as internet users.
I don't think that ISOC is the IETF convenor.

Okay apologies for using that word as i am sure it may have been mis-interpreted perhaps using the phrase "chartered by ISOC" is better :)
