There are credible arguments both for & against such gTLDs. It's possible that an association of universities may successfully object to .university as I don't think the .university application is from such an association/s. Of course, there may be a challenge against a successful objection seeing the .university application is not a community application.

In essence, those in favor of new gTLDs based their arguments on choice, competition & consumer trust. ICANN's own premise is based on these factors. ++1
I think this is an application subject to approval as i am really interested on those that finally get cleared. I see application for extension like university, anthem, allstate...these are very
critical words that could cause lot of segregation of the Internet, companies such as dstv, dotafrica, mnet, etc are ok as that is a brand name, university for instance is a world brand that should not be played with!

If finally approved i wonder how signing up for the domain will look like. Looks like ICANN is looking for funds all the way, Since there is already ccTLD even if the extension must be created(for reasons i currently don't know) then let it be within the ccTLD and not at gTLD level. Which i think is already inplace that is why we have .university.ng(equivalent to edu.ng), .allstate.us(equivalent to gov.us) etc..... Alhough while googling i realized that of US is .gov and not ccTLD like Nigeria .gov.ng (it may just me alone, but it seems some things have gone wrong in the past)

Well perhaps there are other perspective of this whole thing that i don't yet understand but with my current understanding, these are un-neccessary partitioning!

Its
also interesting to note that there was one request from west Africa ;)
