Cette nomination a été officialisée à l’occasion du sommet de l’ICANN, qui se tient à Carthagena de Indias (Colombie) jusqu'au 10 décembre 2010. <br><br>Elu pour un mandat d’un an renouvelable, Stéphane Van Gelder, était auparavant vice-président de ce même conseil du GNSO. <b>Il sera amené, à ce titre, à poursuivre son travail sur l’important dossier qu’est le lancement des nouvelles extensions Internet</b>. Prochainement libéralisées, ces nouvelles extensions vont permettre à des entreprises, des collectivités, des organismes de recherche ou des associations, de disposer de leurs propres extensions Internet (.CANON, .PARIS, .GREEN, .UNICEF, etc.) ; donc de créer, gérer, et contrôler leurs propres noms de domaine. <br><br><b>Le Conseil du GNSO est composé de 20 membres représentant l'ensemble des acteurs impliqués dans le fonctionnement de l'Internet:</b> <u>professionnels du droit, fournisseurs d'accès, entreprises, utilisateurs, entités non-commerciales, registres (gestionnaires d'extension) et registrars (bureaux d'enregistrement de noms de domaine)</u>. Organe international, le Conseil est composé de membres venant des USA, d'Argentine, de Russie, du Pakistan, d'Angleterre, d'Allemagne, d'Australie ou encore du Brésil. <br><br>L’élection d’un français à ce niveau des instances internationales de l’Internet chargées de la gestion des extensions génériques comme le .COM est une première.
