<H1>Hackers Plunder Pirate Bay User Data</H1>

Hackers have plundered The Pirate Bay for its treasure, in this case the booty is the e-mail addresses, <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=IP&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>IP</FONT></A> address and user names of four million of the site's users, according to several reports. <BR>
A group of three hackers from Argentina have taken credit for the attack, according to an interview posted by <I><A href="http://krebsonsecurity.com/2010/07/pirate-bay-hack-exposes-user-booty/" target=_blank><FONT color=#0b2795>Krebs On Security</FONT></A></I> with one of the hackers, a 23-year-old who calls himself Ch Russo.
<P>In the interview Russo claims that he and two other buccaneers uncovered multiple <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=SQL&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>SQL</FONT></A> injection vulnerabilities on The Pirate Bay, a widely popular file sharing and torrent site. By exploiting the vulnerabilities, the trio was able to access 4 million usernames, e-mail addresses and IP addresses.
<P>Russo reportedly toyed with turning the data over to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which could prosecute The Pirate Bay users for <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=copyright&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>copyright</FONT></A> infringement and other violations.
<P>"Probably these groups would be very interested in this information, but we are not [trying] to sell it," Russo told <I>Krebs On Security</I>. "Instead we wanted to tell people that their information may not be so well protected."
<P>Russo proved the hack by providing Brian Krebs, who runs Krebs on security, with his username and other info that Russo obtained in the Pirate Bay hack.
<P>Russo also contacted The Pirate Bay and alerted them to his discovery, the <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=hacker&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>hacker</FONT></A> said, but so far has not received a response. The Pirate Bay did, however, fix the <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=vulnerability&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>vulnerability</FONT></A> exploited by Russo and his tango of hackers.
<P><A href="http://thepiratebay.org/" target=_blank><FONT color=#0b2795>The Pirate Bay</FONT></A> has not acknowledged the attack, but earlier Thursday the site was down.
<P>"Upgrading some stuff, <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=database&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>database</FONT></A> is in use for backups, soon back again.. Btw, it's nice weather outside I think," the site said.
<P>The RIAA and the international IFPI have made many attempts to make The Pirate Bay walk the plank and have it shut down, but their attempts have been mostly unsucceseful. Last year, <A href="http://www.crn.com/managed-services/219401267"><FONT color=#0b2795>the peer-to-peer site appeared sunk</FONT></A> as the co-founders were sentenced in April to a year in prison and fined $3.6 million in damages for copyright violations. The Pirate Bay was then successfully sued in a Dutch court and later a Swedish court pulled the plug on the local <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=ISP&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>ISP</FONT></A> <A href="http://www.crn.com/encyclopedia/defineterm.jhtml?term=hosting&x=&y="><FONT color=#0b2795>hosting</FONT></A> The Pirate Bay. Throughout it all, The Pirate Bay has sailed on. <BR>
