Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOC Ghana) and the Department of Computer
Science and IT (DCSIT) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) are organizing a
homecoming ceremony in honor of <b><span style='font-weight:bold'>Prof. Nii
Narku Quaynor</span></b>, honoree of the Jon Postel Service Award for 2007 for his
role in promoting the Internet on the African Continent. Prof. Quaynor is the 9<sup>th</sup>
winner of the award and the first African to win the award.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Quaynor is Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cape
Coast and Chairman of Ghana.Com, the first Internet Service provider in <st1:place
w:st="on">West Africa</st1:place>. He was the first African to sit on the Board
of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the global
Internet governance body. Through Ghana.Com (Network Computer Systems Ltd.),
Prof. Quaynor contributed significantly to development of Internet Access
infrastructure in several West African countries including <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Gambia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Liberia</st1:country-region>,
<st1:country-region w:st="on">Togo</st1:country-region>, and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Nigeria</st1:country-region></st1:place> to through capacity
building programs. He was instrumental in the formation of AfNOG (Africa
Network Operators Group) which has trained several ICT leaders in <st1:place
w:st="on">Africa</st1:place> through its annual workshops and forum meetings.
He was also instrumental in the establishment of AfriNIC, the African Numbers
(IP) organization, AfREN, the Africa research and Education Network forum and
AFTLD(Africa Top level Domain) the <st1:place w:st="on">Africa</st1:place> (domain)
names organization. Prof. Quaynor is the immediate past-president of ISOC Ghana
and currently board chair.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Jon B. Postel Service Award instituted by Internet Society (ISOC) </span></font><font

Verdana;color:#4D4D4D'>is an annual award given to an outstanding Internet </span></font><font
size=2 color="#4d4d4d" face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:
Tahoma;color:#4D4D4D'>Engineer globally who has contributed significantly to
the advancement of the Internet. </span></font><font size=2 color="#4d4d4d"

award was established by the Internet Society to recognize and commemorate the
extraordinary stewardship exercised by Jonathan B. Postel over the course of a
thirty year career in networking. Between 1971 and 1998, Jon managed, nurtured
and transformed the RFC (Request for Comments) series of notes created by Steve
Crocker in 1969. He also served as the ARPANET "numbers Czar" and
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority over the same period of time</span></font><font
color="#4d4d4d" face=Tahoma><span style='font-family:Tahoma;color:#4D4D4D'>.</span></font><font

the award on 5<sup>th</sup> December 2007 at the</span></font><font size=2

glass crystal award will be unveiled at the ceremony. There will also be a
re-launch of the Oware Computing book authored Prof. Nii Quaynor. Oware is the
old African game played differently in different parts of <st1:place w:st="on">Africa</st1:place>.
In his book, Nii Quaynor unveils the Oware as powerful calculating tool
comparable to the Abacus used by the Chinese.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
