"Proposed changes that would have shielded some of the personal information stored in the Internet's WHOIS database from public view were indefinitely shelved last month, after a working group failed to reach agreement on how or even whether to implement the privacy reforms," says a report in ComputerWorld.
<br>Privacy advocates were advocating for less information to be available, while "companies and law enforcement agencies that depend on WHOIS information to go after phishers, cybersquatters, spammers and other online miscreants" were more than happy with the status quo. The article says the proposed changes failed to gain broad support within ICANN with, among other things, "concerns about how the exceptions process would be handled, and when and under what circumstances access to the data would be granted according to Milton Mueller.

Digital Trends paints the issue as confusing with the breakup of Yugoslavia, new ccTLDs were created yet residents of the former Yugoslavia are still registering .yu names. For .su, which has a lobby group fighting to keep it, they are gaining around 1,500 registrations per month with a total of 10,000. Although as other news this week shows, this pales into insignificance with .ru who passed its one millionth registration this week.
<br>The Register meanwhile paints the story as a Cold War overhang, but does quote Kim Davies speaking to Reuters, "In 1992 it [.su] was taken off the ISO list and since that day it has been at odds with the ISO standard.
