A couple of thoughts on this ..
The amount of data published is reduced – yes, but depending on how things pan out over the next 12 months plus with changes to all the underlying policies that could change or the way access is granted to 3rd parties could change.
I wouldn’t be urging people to opt for whois privacy, but I’d also be cautious about saying simply that it’s not needed
Also getting the provider to put their details into any of the fields is a form of whois privacy and makes them partially liable for the domain’s usage. We wouldn’t do that for free and I suspect a lot of others wouldn’t either.
Regards
Michele

I don't think you need WHOIS privacy protection for dotAfrica domain. Why? - look at the output of a whois for my own posix.africa..
I've removed Redacted and some other noise lines.
Domain Name: posix.africa

What is displayed is Nameservers, the Registrant Organisation and location of the organisation. If that's too much for you - then ask your Registrar or reseller to put in their information for those fields. As long as its your name and e-mail address as Registrant - the domain is under your control.
What I see for alex.africa is:-
Registrant Organization: N A
Registrant State/Province: South Africa
Registrant Country: ZA
... and even there I have a feeling alex.africa is not in South Africa?

Dear All,
I was curious about how ICANN’s new privacy/GDPR guidelines are filtering down to .Africa?
I am renewing domains (.Africas), and decided I don’t want to or need to buy WHOIS privacy protection.
Am I safe in this assumption?
Are there any ICANN wonks who can advise?
I am referring to the following specs:
https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/advisory-statement-gtld-registration-data-specs-17may18-en.pdf
https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/gtld-registration-data-specs-en
Best,
Alex
