SUMMARY

This week, the United Nations announced it has launched a high-level panel on digital cooperation, co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma. The 20-member panel will “identify policy, research and information gaps, and make proposals to strengthen international cooperation in the digital space,” according to a release.

The UN Human Rights Council adopted a new Resolution on the promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet, which highlights online freedom of expression and privacy and recognizes UNESCO’s ongoing process of developing Internet Universality indicators, which contributes to advancing online human rights and achieving Sustainable Development Goal.

The issues of international cybersecurity may be included in the agenda of an upcoming summit between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Finland on July 16, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS on Friday.

A legal proposal to overhaul the EU’s cybersecurity rules passed a major hurdle on Tuesday (10 July) as the European Parliament’s Industry Committee (ITRE) approved a plan to create a voluntary system for certifying the security level of technology products.

India has adopted recommendations strongly backing net neutrality that experts say could be the "strongest" in the world. The recommendations explicitly forbid operators from throttling data speeds for any online service, and mandates all content be treated the same.

The digital economy and women's role in economic growth will be addressed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meet in Chile in 2019, authorities have said.

The China Internet Report 2018 shows that China tech trinity Baidu, Tencent, and Alibaba, collectively known as “BAT”, are expanding their businesses to every corner, ranging from retail to fintech. The report says also that China has twice as many internet users as the total population of the Unted States.
