SUMMARY

This week, “Facebook has removed 18 accounts and 52 pages associated with the Myanmar military, including the page of its commander-in-chief, after a UN report <https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/27/myanmars-military-accused-of-genocide-by-damning-un-report> accused the armed forces of genocide and war crimes. On the same day, a United Nations fact finding mission in Myanmar called for an independent investigation of Facebook’s role in what the mission’s report<https://www.ohchr.org/Documents/HRBodies/HRCouncil/FFM-Myanmar/A_HRC_39_64.pdf?smid=nytcore-ios-share> describes as a genocide against the Rohingya ethnic minority.."

On WHOIS compliance to GDPR, “The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has updated its FAQ page<http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/gdpr/> on the impact that the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will have on the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP)”.

Besides “Advocates for open Whois records are shopping a bill in the US that would force domain name registrars to publish Whois information, countering the impact of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)”.

On net neutrality, “California’s state Assembly has approved a bill that would not just restore the net neutrality protections enacted under President Obama, but go beyond them, potentially creating the strictest rules in the country”.

On Child online protection, “The UK is to build a cyber centre in Nairobi to help Kenyan police stop child abuse images being shared online”.

On artificial intelligence, “Japan is working to develop technology that will fully utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to detect suspicious vessels, according to sources”.

"Russia is experimenting with more precise technology to block individual online services after an attempt to shut down banned messaging service Telegram failed, but Moscow has yet to find a way to shut it down without hitting other traffic".
