SUMMARY

This week; Internet users worldwide are becoming more worried about their privacy online and many question the protections offered by Internet and social media companies, a new United Nations survey has found.

On digital economy, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has called for a holistic policy approach towards digitalisation and trade.

On cybersecurity, using the 2018 RSA Conference as a backdrop, Microsoft has joined 33 other IT companies in signing the Cybersecurity Tech Accord, a pledge to protect users from cyber-attacks.

On data protection, Facebook is taking its first formal steps this week toward complying with the European Union’s new data privacy regulations, known as the GDPR, which are set to go into effect on May 25.

Russia’s internet watchdog has blocked an estimated 16m IP addresses in a massive operation against the banned Telegram messaging app that could set a new precedent for Russian online censorship.

On infrastructure, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed that a telecommunications subsea cable between the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Australia will go live at the end of 2019.

More child sexual abuse images are being discovered online than ever before as paedophiles go to new lengths to evade detection, a report has warned.
