SUMMARY

This week, Facebook's Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg spent two days facing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers, after the group admitted that Cambridge Analytica used data from 87 million users for political manipulation purposes.

Moreover, more than 2.6 billion records were breached in 2017, which breaks down to 7.1 million lost records every day, nearly 300,000 every hour, nearly 5,000 every minute and 82 every second according to Netherlands-based security firm Gemalto

In Africa, the African Union Commission has made its foray into the cyber world by officially unveiling its online Knowledge Management (KM) platform of the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF).

In Europe, twenty-four EU countries pledged to band together to form a “European approach” to artificial intelligence in a bid to compete with American and Asian tech giants. Also, the 22 member states signed on April 10, 2018, a declaration to establish a European Blockchain Partnership. In addition, the European Union is set to demand tech giants like Facebook and Google do more to stop the spread of fake news on their websites by the end of the year to avoid possible regulatory actions, according to a draft document seen by Reuters.

On digital economy, running for the third year, the Internet Economy Summit opened on April 12 attracted entrepreneurs and top-level executives from various business sectors to explore the global business opportunities brought about by innovation and the digital economy.
A Russian court has ruled that messaging app Telegram must be blocked in the country. The ruling follows months of battles between Telegram and Roskomnadzor, Russia’s telecommunications watchdog.

Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said on Wednesday that the ride-sharing company still believes in the prospects for autonomous transport after one of its self-driving vehicles was involved in a fatal crash in Arizona last month.

On child abuse, a three-year international investigation into the online sexual abuse of children has resulted in the arrest of over 150 people, including 16 Canadians, police revealed on Thursday
