Issue 8 of the Geneva Digital Watch newsletter is out! Published on 29 February, the issue provides the latest digital policy updates which took place in February. The main highlights:
The editorial highlights the difficult choices which society needs to make, in view of recent controversies on encryption and zero-rating services. These could become the first building blocks of a 'digital social contract'.
The Apple/FBI controversy on encryption is explored in more detail; the issue tracks the main developments.
India’s decision to block zero-rating services raised many critical points, including whether it is better to have some access to the Internet or no access at all. This issue explores the arguments in favour and against zero-rating services.
Child online protection often takes on a protectionist approach, and can sideline other important dimensions to children’s use of the Internet. On the occasion of Safer Internet Day in February, this issue explores the elements of a rights-based approach.
Included in this issue are the main developments in digital policy; the events which took place in International Geneva; and upcoming events taking place in March.
