AFRINIC new Board members

Badru Ntege and Paulos Nyirenda have been elected to the Board of AFRINIC to represent the Eastern and Southern African regions. Badru garnered 54 votes to John Walubengo's 23 and Simon Balthazar 18 votes. Nyirenda got 59 votes to come tops followed by Mark Elkins 22 and Gift Shava 14 votes. The elections marked the end of AFRINIC 16.

FIREd up
AFRINIC has officially launched the Fund for Internet Research and Education (FIRE). Launching the FIRE Programme, AFRINIC CEO Adiel Akplogan said the initiative would go a long way in encouraging and supporting the development of solutions to information and communication needs in Africa, and contribute to the social and economic development in the continent.

Fellowship gains
Four fellows were invited to the AFRINIC 16 meeting to have a first hand experience of what goes on at the meeting, and to enhance their relations with the African Internet community. ''This is my first AFRINIC meeting and I found it extremely useful especially in terms of getting to understand the different kinds of things that happen here, the policies, and what the community stands for. It is important to be part of the the community that AFRINIC serves ... ,'' said Towela Nyirenda Jere, a fellow from Malawi.

Winning matters
Alain Aina, a technology guru, is this year's winner of the Network Information and Infrastructure Award. A delighted Aina said: "For me, it was a big surprise. I felt humbled upon receiving this award which also comes with a great responsibility. I shall continue to work and contribute at the regional level, and continue to be involved in developing the technical aspects of the Internet, training and policy processes."

Au revoir Banjul
More than 250 delegates for the AFRINIC 16 meeting bid goodbye to Banjul. Most of the delegates expressed their satisfaction with the city for hosting the meeting. They were particularly happy with the venue, and the hospitality shown by the local people.

Sudan will be the next host AFRINIC-17 meeting. Asim Khair from the University of Khartoum gave the community an insight of the upcoming venue and infrastructures available
