What a Year for ccTLDs!

With 2010 coming to its conclusion, we thought it worth looking back over what has been a truly remarkable year in the history of the DNS. We started the year with 247 delegated ccTLDs. We're ending it with 261 delegated ccTLDs (including 15 IDN ccTLDs), with a further 15 IDN ccTLDs pending delegation, for a grand total of 276 ccTLDs.

The highlights of the year from a ccTLD perspective were:

* the .yu (Yugoslavia) ccTLD was removed from the root zone<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hdXNyZWdpc3RyeS5jb20vYmxvZy8/cD0zNTk=&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79>
* the first IDN ccTLDs were delegated <http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hdXNyZWdpc3RyeS5jb20vYmxvZy8/cD0zNzE=&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79>
* .cn halved in size due to new registration requirements and non-renewal of discounted registrations
* the launch of second-level registrations in Colombia's .co
* Russia's IDN ccTLD achieved over 500,000 registrations in the first week<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hdXNyZWdpc3RyeS5jb20vYmxvZy8/cD02NjM=&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79> of general availability
* ccTLD-based URL shortening services<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hdXNyZWdpc3RyeS5jb20vYmxvZy8/cD01NzU=&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79> took off on the back of Twitter's popularity

2011 looks like it will be an equally eventful year with dozens of IDN ccTLDs to complete their launch processes, and the opening of applications for new gTLDs expected to occur mid-year.

We'll be keeping a close eye on developments throughout.

Wishing you all a happy December and a safe and prosperous start to the New Year!

Best regards,

LACTLD and ICANN Meetings - Cartagena, Colombia

AusRegistry International is proud to be sponsoring the next Latin American & Caribbean TLD Association (LACTLD) Meeting. This meeting will focus on 'Commercial Aspects for ccTLDs' and is to be held in Cartagena, Colombia, from the 2nd to the 4th of December.

This meeting is open to non-members of LACTLD, so if you'll be in Cartagena before the ICANN Meeting, you may wish to come along. More details are available from the LACTLD website.<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sYWN0bGQub3JnLz9jbWQ9aW5kZXgmZnVuYz1kZXRhbGxlX2NvbnRlbmlkb19pbmRleCZjb2RfY29udGVuaWRvPTEwOA==&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79>

We will be presenting at the meeting and look forward to connecting with ccTLD Managers from around the region.

We will also be attending the ICANN Meeting, which runs from the 5th to the 10th of December. If you'll also be attending, we look forward to seeing you there.

Russia's Cyrillic IDN ccTLD Blasts Off!

The recent public launch of Russia's Cyrillic script IDN ccTLD has smashed all expectations, much like a Soyuz rocket blasting off into space from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

See below for the Cyrillic text. This transliterates to .RF, for Russian Federation.

With 100,000 names registered in the first hour alone, and over 550,000 names now registered, this newest ccTLD has already hit 25th on the list of largest ccTLDs.

Even if we assume that a large proportion of registrations are speculative at this early stage, this launch cannot be regarded as anything but a huge success. This success proves that there is real community demand for native script Top-Level Domains, and bodes well for the prospects of other IDN Top-Level Domains, in both the ccTLD and gTLD contexts.

More Industry Growth Statistics

Nominet has recently released its fourth annual Domain Name Industry report, which includes some interesting observations.

Excluding China's .cn from calculations, the underlying ccTLD growth rate over 2010 is 11.3%, slightly above the gTLD growth rate of 9%. It is important to exclude .cn from these figures as the number of active .cn domain names has halved over the past nine months, down from a peak of 13.5 million.

Top 20 ccTLD Registries by total registrations - Nominet figures

1. .de (Germany)
2. .uk (United Kingdom)
3. .cn (China)
4. .nl (Netherlands)
5. .eu (European Union)
6. .ru (Russian Federation)
7. .br (Brazil)
8. .ar (Argentina)
9. .it (Italy)
10. .pl (Poland)
11. .au (Australia)
12. .fr (France)
13. .us (USA)
14. .ch (Switzerland)
15. .ca (Canada)
16. .es (Spain)
17. .jp (Japan)
18. .kr (Korea, Republic of)
19. .dk (Denmark)
20. .be (Belgium)

Interestingly, and unlike Verisign's recent report,<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy52ZXJpc2lnbi5jb20vZG9tYWluLW5hbWUtc2VydmljZXMvZG9tYWluLWluZm9ybWF0aW9uLWNlbnRlci9kb21haW4tbmFtZS1yZXNvdXJjZXMvZG9tYWluLW5hbWUtcmVwb3J0LWp1bmUxMC5wZGY=&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79> Nominet excludes Tokelau's .tk from its Top 20 list (Verisign has them at number 11).

As noted above, Russia's IDN ccTLD is currently sitting at number 25, even though it is only into its second week of open registrations. It should not be too long before it, or perhaps China's soon to-launch IDN ccTLDs, become the first IDN ccTLD to make the top 20 list.

IDN ccTLD Status Update

Morocco's Arabic script IDN ccTLD string was approved by ICANN on the 15th of November. We congratulate them on joining the increasingly crowded IDN ccTLD club!

John Yunker, who is responsible for the excellent Country Codes map<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL2J5dGVsZXZlbC5jb20vbWFwL21hcF9vZl9XV1cuaHRtbA==&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79> that adorns our wall, has started work on an IDN ccTLD version, which shows the spread of IDN ccTLDs across much of Asia and the Middle East.<http://ausregistry.platformdirect.com.au/pdredirect.php?link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5nbG9iYWxieWRlc2lnbi5jb20vYmxvZy8yMDEwLzExLzE4L3RoZS1uZXh0LWludGVybmV0LXJldm9sdXRpb24v&ctid=74&pid=1323&auth=4671aeaf49c792689533b00664a5c3ef&cid=79> John has assured us that he'll be making the IDN ccTLD version available as a poster once it's finished.

Delegated IDN ccTLDs

There have been no new delegations of IDN ccTLDs since our last edition, however the ICANN Board has approved the delegation of Qatar's Arabic script IDN ccTLD (see below), alongside the re delegation of their .qa ASCII ccTLD.
