[AfrICANN-discuss] A .com domain name increases a company's exposure to foreign lawsuits, rules ECJ

You may have a point there, Alex, but I suspect we will need to wait much
longer before governments (govts) could agree on a sustainable solution. And
the wikileaks "phenomenon" may basically make it difficult for many govts to
agree on a US-driven solution, no matter how sound & sustainable the US
solution might be.

McTim,

Your point about a govt solution leading to limited online freedoms is very
valid, I must add. China is a good case on this one. Plus the ITU (no less)
is keen in using its govt power to exert more influence over the internet,
including the DNS. The worrying trend is that govts tend to want to control
everything and control stifles freedom. Probably, that's why the perceived
increasing US oversight over ICANN (including the recent shut-down of
certain websites) may eventually cause many to migrate to alternative DNSes
(e.g. peer-to-peer DNS)!

This makes me feel a bit hopeless & to eventually conclude that it may be a
good thing to leave govts out of this....which of course won't happen.
