Le Réseau Africain de Communication par Satellite se réunit en Gambie

Le Réseau Africain de Communication par Satellite (RASCOM), une organisation intergouvernementale panafricaine chargée de créer un réseau de connectivité à travers le continent, organise sa 11ème réunion ordinaire à Banjul dans la capitale gambienne à partir de ce lundi.


Dans son allocution de bienvenue, le directeur général de RASCOM, le Dr. Jones A Killime, a indiqué que le RASCOM constitue le seul projet existant dans le domaine des technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) à l’échelle continentale.
Il a exhorté les gouvernements africains à manifester davantage de volonté politique en vue d’appuyer les projets du RASCOM pour que le concept devienne une réalité.
Selon M. Killime, le RASCOM est un réseau de connectivité qui permet de faciliter la connexion entre les pays africains mais également de réduire les pertes énormes liées aux installations de réseaux internet.
« C’est l’occasion d’exhorter tous les pays membres à se connecter au très convoité réseau de connectivité africaine. Ce faisant, nous œuvrons tous pour la réalisation de l’aspiration des africains à intégrer la société de l’information », a-t-il souligné.
Il a révélé que le RASCOM a récemment créé un réseau de connectivité entre plusieurs pays africains afin de renforcer le réseau électronique panafricain qui, selon lui, s’inscrit dans la dynamique de la coopération entre l’Inde et l’Afrique par le biais de l’Union Africaine.
Par ailleurs, M. Killimi a indiqué que le RASCOM par le biais de la société Rascomstar_QAF est en train d’accomplir sa tâche en fournissant un satellite à l’Afrique, à titre commercial.
Il a révélé qu’en Afrique, il y a un seul abonné fixe à large bande pour 1000 personnes, contrairement à l’Europe avec 2200 souscripteurs pour 1000 personnes.
L’Afrique, poursuit-il, a le plus faible taux de pénétration d’internet dans le monde et dépense plus de 500 millions USD par an pour la mise en place de réseaux internet au niveau local.
Selon lui, « aujourd’hui, nous vivons dans la société de l’information globale où la communication et le savoir constituent des outils vitaux pour la création de richesses et de prospérité sur le continent ».
Il a exprimé sa gratitude à l’endroit de l’Union Africaine pour le rôle qu’elle a joué dans la création de cette plateforme ainsi que sa volonté politique en appuyant les projets du RASCOM.
